is it possible to over arch your back??

I was doing gm's the other day and kept my back as arched as possible but still felt some pain in my lower back (lumbar spine area). So just out of curiosity I tried not keeping my back as tightly arched. I still kept it straight, but just didnt tighten up my lower back as much. I felt ALOT less pressure on my lower back and ended up setting a 40 lb pr. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this? Is it safe for me to keep doing this as long as i dont let my back round over?

if it hurts, dont do it. Spatts has some excellent videos of a properly done GMs as a sticky. Seen em?

yep, i've seen every video i can get my hands on. It's not a difficult movement, at least not from what i've seen. You put some weight on your shoulders, keep your back straight, bend forward and come back up. But for some reason I'm having trouble with it and i'm thinking it may be from over arching my back but i've never heard of anyone having this problem before.

I have to be real careful when I arch my back too much.
I had an xray done last year and it showed that when I arch too much, the vertebra touch in the back and are apart in the front because the disk is over used from many years of lifting. Actually the bones rub in the back when I arch real hard.

yes it is possilbe to overarch your back and its very bad for you if your doing this....you should keep your abdominus tight while doing this......you dont want to overarch as it puts the vertebraes at stress just as slouching crushes your discs....thats why when squatting its important not to overarch it.
