is it possible to have a balanced strength and endurance routine?

i am starting to get a bit concerned here, because it seems i have neglected muscular endurance a little bit since i came out of active duty (we really didnt have access to weights on a regular basis) in favor of getting some strength and size back on.

well, the strength and size has been coming back (almost too fast when it comes to size...don't want to do that, because it hurts my run time), but my muscular endurance has definitely gone down compared to what it used to be.

my question is, is it possible to be both training for muscular endurance and strength at the same time, if so how would i go about doing that? it seems to me that you have to sacrifice one to have the other.

i will be going back in sooner rather than later, and i need to get some things tweaked here, so any help that could be offered would be greatly appreciated.

thanks :)

ok, this thread has been kinda quiet so far....

this is what i was thinking. do a three day 'split' like this:

A-Heavy, B-Heavy, C-Heavy, Off, A-Endurance, B-Endurance, C-Endurance, Off,

on my heavy days, keep the reps low and the weight up and train for strength. on the endurance days, keep the reps HIGH (i'm thinking around 15-20 maybe more, but not sure, since i never used weights to train for endurance...we just did your typical army pt thing) and the weight low. each body part will be worked twice a week.

yes, i know a lot of people will be hollering overtraining this and overtraining that, but i dont see how else it is plausible to attempt to do both. not to mention, i would rather have my body be prepared to deal with a high stress load and start adapting now than when i go back in training, where there will be a huge shock?

come on, people, let's hear some opinions.

A lot of people alternate between light and heavy workouts each week, or every other week. Doing them both in the same week may be too extreme, but you won't know until you try it.

I think you will have to forego one for the other to some extent, dependng on what you ultimately need it for.

But higher reps is obviously the easiest way to do it.

I wouldn't want to increase your bodyweight though as that will impact negatively on your muscular endurance.

One thing for another.

I am pretty strong as well as having pretty good cardio and endurance. There is a difference between training for looks compared to function. I'll take function 8 days a week.
