Is being sore a good thing?

Okay I have heard alot of diffrent things and would like some answers.

So is it a good thing to get sore after a workout? I have heard that it is, because you have to tear down to build up.
Others tell me that this is BS. Give me the facts.
If you have links to studys done by University that would help also.

BTW is this site free? Or will I be charged after7 days?
Thanks,
Jeremy:D

this site is free, you want to be sore after some of your workouts but that doesnt mean that it wasnt productive if you were not. variation is key to progression and just keep that in mind, dont worry soley about how sore your getting.

it really depends on your goals....

from experience I can tell that when you are sore you are primarily working for muscle growth, hence this is why many BB's work to total failure. Powerlifters on the other hand primarily work on the amount of weight lifted, and not primarily total muscle fatigue since they strengthen their CNS to max potential....

So it really depends on what type of goals you have...

Ya it's good to be sore sometimes.I mean if it becomes like an unbearable pain thats not good. But especially if you just recently started working out again or if you trained a bodypart that you havn't focused on in a while you may get sore. This will begin to go away though once your muscles get more use to the stress.

Thanks for the replys. But I need someone to really go into the subject deep. Explain in detail why being sore is a good thing.

Thanks,
Jeremy;)

If I can recall this correctly, soreness is DOMS or Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness caused by muscle fibers which have been broken down. Exercise breaks down muscle fibers. Whether or not soreness is good or not depends on your goals.

I like to be a little sore the next day...always.

Every workout I do makes me sore. This has been going on for the past 7 years. I use soreness as a gauge to determine how intense I trained during a particular session. I am a huge advocate of training to failure. I feel that training to failure for two sets allows me to stimulate as many muscle fibers as possible. Every time I walk into the gym, I never set limitations. I take a set as far as possible, trying to beat last weeks reps. I feel that my soreness is caused from minor muscle damage and intense lactic acid build up. The only thing I can do is rest and eat like a madman. For me, soreness is necessary.

If you are sore it means that you broke down muslce tissue which is the goal of training. The thing you need to watch out for is being sore all the time. This is a sign of overtraining. Make sure you listen you body. If you are sore in particular body part for an extended period of time you should take some time off or atleast train it less frequently.

delayed onset muscle soreness is neither good nor bad.

its caused by numerous things, most of which are not beneficial for size (variation, ultra high reps, overworking, etc) and others which some consider to be good, such as training to failure (god knows im not getting in to this.. i dont think its productive but i put it aside because so many believe it is) however, this does not mean all soreness is bad or anything, I get sore often when I do something different or push myself a bit harder on something. the reason I believe DOMS is not great is because it screws up recovery (from hardly at all to a ton depending on how sore you are), which isnt productive at all.

i see it as a side effect rather than something that i should really concern myself with, I rarely ever am sore for longer than a day or two (unless I do something like 20 rep squats or a training camp for fencing), so it never really interferes. if i dont get sore it doesnt mean i did something wrong, and if i get sore, great, who cares.

I try to avoid being sore, but I always have some sort of an ache unfortunately. But real heavy DOMs has not been felt for quite some time, and is not needed for growth

I only get it from doing a new exercise. Its caused by the negative stretching of the move.

Do only concentric moves and you will never get sore.
