Is anyone here an auto mechanic?

I want to become an auto mechanic. The reason is, I'd figure a good mechanic can find work anywhere on earth. That's a definite plus, especially if you like to move around a lot, like me. Right now I am in software, which probably makes me more money, but that seriously limits where I can live.

So what does it take to become a mechanic?

Go for it bro....you won't get "rich" but you can make a DAMN nice living plus even in this bad economy you'll have lots of places clamoring for your skills. I used to be one and I'm considering renewing my licence. A few years back my plant closed and I listened to some advice and did the "right" thing and joined the high-tech world and got a degree in electronics. Hooked up with an awesome company (Lucent) and made good money....but I actually made better money getting my hands dirty. Then the market collapsed and I found myself getting back into the industrial sector. I'm a welder/fitter and a maintenance mechanic by trade. Here even in the crappy economy there were alot of jobs available and all paid ALOT better than what I'd have to take using my "degree". Everyone seems to look down on blue collar workers and shit, but let me tell ya its nice to have a job to "fall back on" where you make more money than you were before!! Either learn auto mechanics or welding and you'll always have a decent job trust me.

Thanks for your words. I am 23 now and I know JACK about cars. I mean jack. I am pretty handy with building stuff - like tables, shelves, crap like that. Where would I learn to do auto work?

Well just use the 'net and do a search, there are schools everywhere......and if you ARE getting into the blue collar world, change your nickname...........trust me. Be forewarned an auto mechanic sometimes has to deal with the public, which you will find are so moronic and stupid it makes you lose faith in humanity.

Well I didn't know if you had to go to a school or if you had to get on the job training or what. Or both.
