Is anyone here a scientologist or know of anyone who is?

If that doesn't work out, I wanna join the Movementarians.

Whiskey said:nope, but when I lived in cali I was asked if I was numerous times. Every time I said no they tried to get me to join up
I am interested in the whole mentality of it, a stronger mental self. BUT, I don't want to be a full on member who jumps on couches and shocks Oprah with lightning

It's just Christianity, hard to compare the twoSassy69 said:So Scientology is like the new Jehovah's Witness?
Both sects are quite different but equally as nuts.silverbackn said:It's just Christianity, hard to compare the two

I'm not a Jehovah's Witness, but it is Christianity based on the Bible. I studied with a few JW's for about 6 or 8 months and learned a ton about the bible. It's extremely misunderstood. A lot of people don't think they believe in Jesus. Which is completely untrue. All sects of Christianity focus on certain aspects of the Bible which they deem as important. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just a different interpretation or a shifted emphasis. I am a Christian by the way.JayC9 said:Both sects are quite different but equally as nuts.
I also have known JW's from my youth and studied all of their literature. I still have a copy of their bible because it has cross-references to many other scriptures. In my experience JW's are very nice people, they have a strict non violence code, they're well versed in the bible, they have high moral standards and they take their own time for no monetary gain to go out and tell people what they believe in which not many others sects do. Many people find this annoying which I don't understand because they're not pushy salesman, a simple 'I'm not interested thank you' is all that’s required. People no longer have the time of day to sit and talk but I actually enjoyed all the discussions I've had with them in the past.silverbackn said:I'm not a Jehovah's Witness, but it is Christianity based on the Bible. Well it worked, you sucked me in...lolSassy69 said:I think my comment was related to the stopping you & discussing it.
You know your stuff!!! You pretty much pegged all of it. They do have recurrent themes that they beat you death with, such as that we are living in the last days. They are very genuine people though. Money is not their aim, no one is getting paid. There is no one minister or pastor that is profiting. No one profits monetarily. Which I think is a HUGE part of why organized religion has become a slap in the face to true Christian beliefs. I don't know much about the history and how much their philosophies have changed from the beginning to now. I believe they are very well intentioned. I can understand why people get annoyed with the door to door stuff, but in the heart of someone that has a strong faith they believe that you are sharing information that is lifesaving. When you look at it in that light it doesn't seem quite as abrasive, intruding, or rude. You are right about them giving their lives up for it. Something that was strange to me was that they discouraged education!!! They said that you should just learn a skill or trade and focus your education biblical things. That blew my mind completely. The disfellowshipping thing I won't even get into...I think it's complete bullshit on every level. I think it puts imperfect man into the role of speaking for God and condemning, which were told not to do repeatedly in the Bible. Good thread bro!!!JayC9 said:I also have known JW's from my youth and studied all of their literature. I still have a copy of their bible because it has cross-references to many other scriptures. Ok, so all very well on the surface but what if you scratch through the veneer? Well if you take the time to look through their history starting with their founder Charles Taze Russell who began his movement in the late 1800's, through to the message they preach today you will find not only many discrepancies, complete u-turns in policy and huge contradictions but what’s most worrying in my eyes is there is one theme that runs from start to finish. That theme is fear.
The end is nigh.
Armageddon is just around the corner.
The writings on the wall.
We're living in the last days of this wicked system.
etc, etc
You only have to look at their latest magazines to see that they're still pushing that one. So what they do is they set a date that isn't too far but not too close and they predict that by that date Armageddon will come. When that date draws near and everybody’s still standing they say ‘er actually we made a mistake with the bible translation’ and set another date.
When I studied their literature they predicted that the end of the world would come before the generation of 1914 died and passed away. It was all worked out very cleverly using bible dates and prophecy. Guess what they've done since? Yes, they've changed the date and their view point on that one but I'll bet every negative movement in the world news is still being preached as 'the sign of the times for this dying world'.
These people really believe that the world is about to come to an end any moment now. They believe that the wicked will be washed from the face of the earth and the righteous will live in paradise earth forever. Not only that but all the righteous good people in the past will be resurrected to live with them. The direct effect this has on their followers is that they put their religion first over everything, including family, career, education and their life. The religion becomes their life and the more they get sucked in the more they become brainwashed by the whole thing.
Their channels of information are limited to the literature they produce. Their associations are limited to those within the same faith. They are permitted to only marry those of the same faith. If you break their rules or code of conduct you are disfellowshiped and the other members are not allowed to talk to you. These are the same methods used many times through history to brainwash people.
Why? Money is why, follow the money trail. All religions are big business. Religions promise if you devote your life, your time and your money in this life, you will be rewarded in the next. What a great deal, and do you know what, nobody comes back to complain that they were gypped.
