IRS recognizes obesity with tax breaks

Only if your obese to start with.

Cool. That means that those of us who are healthy will have to pick up the tax slack.

Your government at work.

That's true, but, on the other hand, if it does work at all, we won't be paying the medical expenses of fat people who don't have insurance. Fat-related illnesses and lost time at work and productivity are unbelievably high. I honestly wonder if it might not be cheaper in the long run (although annoying) to have to pay for people to get thing than to pay to treat them when they're fat and sick. Not that I really want to pay for either, but...

You can only get a tax deduction if you are under a dr's supervision and are to lose the weight for health reasons, not to look good.

I have a feeling that this will be manipulated like a lot of other laws with good intentions. In the end, this will not do one thing to cut down on the percentage of obese people in the US, in my opinion.

Yeah, but who is going to miss out on all that money? Doctors? Insurance companies? They're not going to take a paycut so easily. Imagine if every car was suddenly able to get 70mpg. Expect gas prices to quadruple.

Besides, less money for the federal government to use for health expenses of obese people = more money it can use to further curb our rights. This whole idea smells fishy to me.

BTW: What makes anyone think that obese people will actually lose weight just because doing so is now tax deductible?

good points. the american health dudes "(no idea what the society is called) is pissing itself over epidemic levels of type 2 diabetes in your conoutry brought on by obesity (over here too but to a much lesser extent) plus the other health factors associated.

this may save money, if like warik says it works. weight loss isnt impossible IF you eat less and exercise more. now its tax deductable are people gonna do it? fast food is cheap and easy and you get a cool plastic toy

I think it could seriously help the obese that can't afford to go on a doctor supervised diet program. That shit's expensive. I doubt that many people will actually take advantage of this opportunity though. I really haven't heard much about it. Shit, if it helps some poor bastard lose weight like I could give a fuck if I have to spend an extra 20 bucks/year to make up for it.

warik, if you could give 20 bucks to a program to help ONE person get over obesity would you do it?
