Internet privacy, etc.

Hey guys. I haven't seen many threads about this topic, just comments here and there on other threads. So what are your comments about online privacy--using proxy servers or IP addy hiders, etc. Does anybody "use" someone else's wireless network or go to internet cafes, etc when visiting certain sites? When dealing with "grey" orders, research chems and such, do you alwayz use money orders or are some sites ok to use credit cards on? Just hoping to learn from the vets about how careful we should be in our everyday "research". I know not everyone here goes through the hassle of e-gold, right???? Secure email is a given so we don't need to go into that.

Thanks guys! I think other newbies will benefit from this one!!!

Good question. My opinion is that there's really no way to be 100% anonymous when surfing the internet. There's always a way to track your internet traces back to u. So all my steroid-related surfing is done in a public internet where IP or ISP can't be linked to my identity/name. If you've visited gear sites online, or done gear research it's gonna be there in you HD hidden somewhere, and even if u use internet track erasers, or clean your cache, they can always recover the data if they wil, although very expensive.
Proxy servers are good to hide your internet ID, but connection speed gets pretty slow. I guess that depends on the proxy server but personally I don't think is worth it.
I like a software called Ghosturf 2005 Platinum, it really does a good job hiding and masking your IP through hubbles, and u don't slow down your connection speed. It also changes your geographical location, so when u run and IP test, it shows someone else's IP and the location is different from where u are accesing the internet. It's easy to install and unlike the proxy servers you only need a couple of clicks and good to go.
The software costs about 15 bucks with s&h included, but u can always get it for free at bitorrent, sharezaa etc.

I would never use my credit card to buy gear. I would never shop online while accesing the web through a public internet access such as the library or cafe internet. I guess wiring the money is the safest way to go when buying the supplements.
Obviously that's just me, I'm sure that many fellas would do things differently, or even strongly disagree with me, but so far so good.

If you're worried about your data ending up on your hard-drive then boot from one of the many Linux live CDs. Knoppix is a popular one, or Gnoppix if you prefer Gnome, but there are others. All processing is done to ram unless you specify otherwise and you can put data that you do wish to keep onto a USB pen-drive.

Yes bittersuit_98 is correct you cannot make your self 100% safe, its all about making it harder for "them" to trace you. Say they have lots of IP address to trace, they will always look for the easy ones first, and may give up on the hard ones.

Proxy, isp hideing wont help you when buying online period...It will help you when going to site...You have to remember when you log on to a forum like this one or any other one they got your isp logged, also every mod on here or any other person that works on the fourm has it also..Unless the admit turns that option off so mods cant see your isp number...If they dont your chances are high that one day you may have you isp given to the feds if one of them gets busted and is trying to wizzel out of it...This may or may not happen but the chances are always there as much as buying on line....

AH HA, you nailed it bro, if people only knew about KNOPPIX!! This program is an operating system all on the CD, your computer boots to the cd and the OS is loaded to RAM, you don't even have to have a hard drive in your computer!! when you cut off you computer, RAM is erased, and IT CAN'T be recovered like hard drive space. You need a decent computer with a decent amount of RAM to run this, but nothing could be more secure

Theres never a way to be 100% safe, all you can do is just try to take measures to protect yourself

ill check that one out drrman

go to www.knoppix.com
its a free download, just download the .iso file and burn it on the cd

it recognizes most any hardware etc and if you have a fast internet connection as most, you'll be online with no configurations or anything, its pretty amazing

There are three versions: Gnoppix CD version, Knoppix CD version, Knoppix DVD version. The G or K indicate whether it uses a KDE or Gnome interface. The DVD version is about 3 gigs and is the same as the CD version but with a lot more software. Not really relevant if you want it just for browsing.

If it's your first time, download the Knoppix CD iso and burn it to CD. You should then be able to boot from the CD and do your browsing with no worries of leaving any trace on your hard drive. It doesn't help with the other aspects of anonimity but does ensure that your own machine isn't going to incriminate you unless someone has already fitted a hardware keylogger or you're already under Tempest surveillance, which isn't likely.

Wow, all great responses guys. Thanks! Keep 'em comin... How 'bout AG orders? Thumbs up or down on credit card ordering? Safer not to, I guess....

cool, so your saying burn it to a cd disk?

yeh, you have to burn it on a disk, the disk is the operating system, you then must configure your BIOS in your computer to boot to the CD drive, it probably will already.

Then just start the computer with the disk in and the operating system will load to ram and run from RAM and the CD drive....so therefore you can't access teh CD drive the knoppix disk is in because it is being used for the operating system...make sense? but again, you can't save settings, favorites, etc, but who cares

Ok. I have a couple of questions.
Once you have booted your PC from the CD you're good to browse. However, can you still use whatever application/software you had installed or pre-configured in Windows to mask your IP/ISP? I mean, If you are going to surf on the internet you still need an IP, am I right? And I'm guessing since it's just a simple bootable CD then you actually will be using your real IP which will leave traces every time you access the internet or visit a website. Therefore, maybe you won't leave any traces on your own Hard Drive, but a record of your IP will be left at every website we visit. Am i right?

I'm sorry, I don't wanna descredit what you said, I just got a little confused. Maybe I'm not making sense, but I mean I don't see how could you teak your internet preferences or mask your IP from a bootable CD.

Anyway, I'll give it a try.

Well proxies and war-driving are different concepts. When you use proxies, you tend to run the risk of being honey-potted and watched, if the proxies were not checked. Watched or not, using proxies is perfectly legal! On the other hand, when you war-drive on private networks, you're breaking the law - so you can be caught. They can track your MAC address via the roter. At the same time, internet shops or open wireless points, are usually logged.

Personally, I use a paid private service for socks and regular proxies. I also own a 4 ft. wireless "card" lol, ok more of an antenna, so I can actually WD via a sock and still use a proxy. Just clone a MAC addy.

There are ways of making the proxy issues none existant by having a dedicated box with remoted logging.
