Bar co-owner convicted of woman's death

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - A former bar owner was convicted Monday of involuntary manslaughter in the alcohol poisoning death of a customer.
Billy LeRoy Scott was accused of sponsoring the "Stoplight Challenge" in July 2004 while he was tending bar.
The victim, Juanita Goodpasture, 31, had a blood alcohol content of .430 when she died after a night of drinking. Some witnesses said she had participated in a bar-sponsored contest, which involved consuming a drink with three parts: one red, one yellow and one green. Other witnesses said the bar didn't sponsor a contest.
Kansas law bars drinking games from places that serve alcohol.
At trial, Scott, former co-owner of The Point, admitted to "buying" the drink for friends on occasion. He also admitted serving the drink to Goodpasture the night before she died.
Scott, 34, of Hutchinson, sat silent with his attorney Kerry Granger as the verdict was read. Neither commented afterward.
"I'm afraid something I might say will be prejudicial during the sentencing portion," Granger said.
Sentencing was set for Oct. 14.
