'Injury' question

i am now 31 and for about the past 5 years have not been consistant with working out, as i have been on again off again several times. i am now on again and going to make a hard core effort to stay that way. i have a question, just out of curiosity, about something that has happened to me a couple of times. anytime that i have not been in the gym for a while i always do a couple of weeks (usually about 2 times a week) of easy full body workouts just to ease my muscles back into it. well.....a couple of years back i hit it a little too hard too quick and for several days afterwards my arms were jacked!! basically they were stuck in a 90 degree position. if i straightened them it was very difficult and would pull very hard on my biceps....to pull them back it was very difficult and pulled really hard on my triceps....also i had some swelling around my elbows....so anyways....this past week i just started working out again and took it pretty easy (2 sets of 10-12 on everything with weights that i could finish fairly easy) because i was worried about the same thing happening again.....well it did, only not as bad! i should be ok to go again this weekend, and from past history pretty much know that i will be ok with my workouts now, but i am just really curious about what happened or why my body is reacting like that. thanks in advance for any input!

Its not really an injury. Your still stiff. Your muscles are stronger then your ligaments because your training has not been constant. Your ligaments are staying contracted do to the stress and the extra blood to the area.
Once you start training they will get use to the stress and they will become more flexiable and relax. You will be just fine!!!

hey thanks man...that's what i was looking for! the technical side of what's going on. i know it's not an injury which is why i typed it like this 'injury'. i just didn't know what to call it for the purpose of posting it. thanks for the info as it really helped to satisfy my curiosity!
