Injured Deltoid: help

I gots an injured deltoid and was wandering if you guys could give me some advice on what I should do about it and if anyone else has expierenced injuring their deltoid. I'll give the short run down on what happened and what it feels like.

Yes I did say just one deltoid (right one) weird uh? Anywhoo It was about a month ago when I was maxing out on my bench press on a bowflex (you know with the rods and all) When I almost completed the rep my right arm just gave out and a sharp pain went shooting in my right deltoid. Ever since I try to stretch that deltoid before and after chest workouts but when I get up there in weight (and sometimes low weight) that pain is there. Sometimes when I straighten my arm out to do curls the pain will shoot down my forearm.

I don't know what to do. Should I hold off on chest exercises for a period of time? Maybe cut out the bowflex? Or something else. It fustrates me because I know I can workout my chest a lot harder but that right deltoid limits me.

Any advice I sure would appreciate it! Thanks,
Andrew

The sound advice would be to avoid motions/exercises that aggrevate the injury. Routine applications of ice for 15min will help keep the inflamation down, as well as speed up tissue healing (after you remove ice, you get a reflex vasodilation which will increase bloodflow to the damaged tissues). Regular stretching will help you keep your range of motion

If the damage is to muscle tissue, you can recover while working out, it will just be delayed. If the damage is to a tendon, then you will continue to aggrevate it and it will in all likelihood not heal.

My advice is ice it before and after you work out, get some anti-inflammatories like acetaminophen, or better yet ibuprofen, and see how it is doing in a week or so. I would also keep weights in ranges that you can acheive failure with 10-12 reps. This will take alot of extra stress of the shoulder.

Lastly, if it is possible, stay away from the bowflex. It is only my opinion, but the bow/cable system, puts unnatural forces/stresses on the joints. My choice would be dumbells.

Good luck

I also have had a serious injury to my shoulder, first off I have rotator cuff tendinitus since I was about 19 from training heavy and gaining body weight to fast. about 2 yrs ago I was go heavy on incline bench press and my shoulder also gave out like yours. Well from that point on there was nothing I could do, the pain was intense and was even pronounced when I woke up in the mourning, I actually dislocated my shoulder and stretched some sort of tendon that conects to my collar bone. Needless to say I could not train. I tried though and once I was warmed up it kind of masked the pain and felt a little better until it happened again, this time I could not even do a side lateral with 5lbs. my shoulder was fucked.
I went to doctors and they wanted to do surgery but I refused. My two brothers ( one is in the NFL and the other arena football) are no strangers to surgery and told me that if I did that I most likely would never regain full motion of my shoulder again. So I opted to take 1 1/2 yrs off from training and focused on work. I did physical therapy for 8 months and just treated my shoulder good.
I wold say go see a doctor so you know exactly what is wrong and go from there, but DO NOT TRAIN ON IT! it is not worth the risk of screwing up your shoulder for good, trust me...Good luck man shoulder injuries suck....Just acept the fact that you will be taking the time off.
