Personally I find injections in the glutes awkward. Even though I've done it enough times to be fairly confident, just the angle is awkward and leaves me with many "fumbles". For example, I just had one prompting me to write this. Basically, pushing some air out of the needle I pushed a bit too much oil out and it made the syringe slightly slippery but I didn't notice until the needle was already an inch in. So my hand slipped off and the whole needle basically fell down hanging out of my butt cheek -- sort of humorous but I'm worried that the sharp tip moving around like that might cause a bit of damage. Of course due to the awkward angle, it took me a sec to grab it again and it was actually tough get the syringe in a position where I could work the plunger and the syringe was still slippery. Seems like I do that sort of thing pretty often (losing my grip on the syringe), especially when working on my left side -- you guys do that sort of stuff too?
In terms of mistakes, the worst I made was when first starting out, probably my third injection I decided it didn't really have to be so deep an injection so I must have injected into the fat or subcutaneous region. I hadn't ever heard that that was that bad and guess I thought I'd invented a more convenient way to inject. Of course I was wrong -- it swelled up immediately but didn't hurt until the next day. Then it hurt like hell for days. I don't know if it was an abscess (wasn't actually infected), but my body really didn't like the foreign substance there and was definitely trying to form a fluid lump around it.
Another mistake I made often early on was I'd use single needle tip, but worse than just dulling it on the rubber stopper I'd let the tip hit the glass inside the bottle. That's a definite mistake.
