First, Sugars and Starches are carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are one of the body's main sources of fuel. The other is fat. Ok.....
When you eat carbs, they break down into glucose, which causes your blood sugar to rise. When the blood sugar is elevated, it is the job of the pancreas to secrete a hormone called insulin. Insulin balances the blood sugar by carring the glucose to the cells, where it will be burned off for energy. By storing the sugar in the cells, your body balances your blood sugar level. If we continue to eat too many carbs at one time , insulin levels get higher and higher, and the cells need less and less energy. Most sugar is then stored as fat, and our engery-burning cells become resistant to the action of insulin. When the blood sugar is not accepted into the cells to be burned as fuel, it will be converted into fat. When your body needs energy, it will first look for carbs to burn as fuel. If there are fewer carbs sources available, your body will break down your fat reserves when you need energy. By cutting back on sugars and starchy foods you force your body to use your fat reserves as energy. Now fats: Putting fat in your mouth will not add fat your butt and thighs. Eating dietary fat causes virtually no secretion of insulin, and insulin must be present to store fat in the fat cells, no matter how much fat you eat, the pancreas will not secrete insulin. But you can gain weight if you eat proteins or fats with carbs. Your body will break down Protein/ Fat eating alone easily, because they trigger virtually no increase in your blood sugar levels. Eating protein/fats with carbs will trigger an insulin response that can lead to both being sent to the fat cells to be stored as fat. Protein takes longer to digest. Fruit should be eaten alone, then wait at least 20 minutes before eating anything else or the fruit will just sit there in the stomach and turn to sugar. Fat is not fattening when eating alone, eat with other fats, vegetables or with proteins, not carbs. I hope this helps anyone who wants to know why you shouldn't eat carbs with proteins. But when you do eat carbs, eat whole grains products, and look for those hidden sugars.
