Index Funds as long term growth security

If you want the S&P 500, you can buy the IVV on the AMEX.

Why S&P and not the NASDAQ 100 (largest 100 non-financial nasdaq firms) that trades as QQQQ on that exchange.

You can get into all of these for free. Ameritrade will let you get them within minutes as the first 30 trades in your first month are free. Or Scottrade where all future trades are $7 each.

It might make more sense with Vangard if you are going to be rolling more and more money into it over time, but the management expense ratio is probably higher.

Still, you may find one lower than Vanguard but just as flexible.
