In Memory of SRV

I saw him in concert twice before his untimely passing, and both shows were beyond description. Words simply can't do justice to the man's music.

As a guitarist myself, it's easy for me to recognize true talent and passion vs. showy "theatrical" players, and SRV was by far the most passionate player I've ever heard or seen. Still to this day I get chills whenever I hear him play "Little Wing", "Life By The Drop" and "Voodoo Chile". "Riviera Paradise" has to be one of the most beautiful guitar songs ever performed.

I'd love to think that somewhere up in heaven, there's an absolutely mind-boggling blues jam going on somewhere with SRV taking center stage. :)

The man may be gone, but his music and his legend will never die.

Damn, wish I'd had seen him in concert. I remember the day he died, I couldn't believe it had really happened.

Saw him more than a dozen times. I own a guitar he played.

He died a short drive from where I grew up.

There isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss his music.

I saw him do lenny on the Pier in NY one summer, all I could see was SRV facing into the sunset reflecting off the Hudson doing what he did best: Make it cry, make it sing.

Which guitar do you have? Was it one of his stage axes?

If I might share a litle story...

About 10 years ago, I had a chance to play both a `58 and a `63 `Strat at one of our local music stores. A customer had just brought them in for consignment. We struck up a conversation about them and he offered to let me play them both.

I plugged the `63 into a 100 watt Randall amp set nice and clean. I found it a bit "twangy" (almost sounded more like a Telecaster than a `Strat) for my ear, but it played beautifully (as far as `Strats go...tend to have rather high action and whatnot).

I sat it back in its case and picked up the `58. I was totally unprepared for what I was about to hear when I plugged it in. It had, by far the most beautiful, rich tone I've heard from a `Strat...no "twang" at all. I played "Lenny" for what I'm sure was only moments, but felt like hours. Just to see what kind of balls it had, I put a little crunch in the amp and played a bit of "Love Struck baby".

For those brief moments in time, the world was a perfect place for me. I have never had another guitar in my arms that felt more "natural" to me than that `58.

Aaahhhhhhh, such wonderful memories :)

Anyhow, I handed the instrument back to the owner and asked him how much he was asking for the `58. He wanted something like $6500...worth every penny (and then some), but out of my price range at the time.

I believe both guitars sold within a matter of days. I certainly envy whoever bought that `58.

Maybe you guys can honor his memory better by typing his name out
see - Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Lighten up Francis...there was no disrespect intended.

Besides, if he had a problem with using his initials, I doubt he'd have them plastered on his favorite guitar

August 27, 1990 - sad, sad day for music.

I still have the Guitar magazine with his interview. How he climbed back up to the top after all the crap he and his band mates put themselves thru speaks volumes about his character.

I still get a chill with Voodoo Chile. Funny how they used his version in Black Hawk Down with the invasion force.
