Important protein Question

Shane

New member
I take a sports nutrition class at college and my professor told me that there is no scientific evidence that suggests that more than 1gram of protein per lb of body weight is benifical. That seems to contradict everything I have learned about protein intake. I even brought up elite bodybuilders and she was like no.

Depends....

Nothing is written in stone when it comes to the human body. Since everybody has a different physiological makeup we can only come up with general guidelines. However i disagree with your teacher. There is scientific studies that back more than 1 gram of protein being beneficial to weight lifters. I'm not sure whether this teacher is trying to scare the class so they don't take in large excess amounts or if he/she just aren't up to date with their studies. The interesting thing about science is that we are always getting a little closer to solving it but we are so far from the real truth. Science does not change we just improve technology and learn the way in which it works to the best of our abilities. Give me some time and i will see what studies i can find on protein intake being beneficial for resistence training. I believe i may be able to find a few that use between 1.4-1.8 grams per bodyweight that has been proven beneficial in the subjects that were tested!!!

Your professor has likely never done studies on A/S using/abusing athletes.Synthesis is GREATLY increased as androgen populations/myonuclear/A/R concentrations increase.

LOL...

You want to prove her wrong??? Believe me no matter what you show her she is prolly not going to believe it. Professors are always right remember??? They think they know it all i had a few like that and when u prove them wrong they only get mad. Is this a college or university we are talking about and does she have her Ph.D and in what???

University and she has a Ph.D, R.D, L.D. she seems to be big in the areobic and endurance style sports but knows little in the way of strenght training.

WOW...

I find that hard to believe that she would say that to your class about protein intake. Are you sure she wasn't talking about the regular population of basically, sedentary people??? If it helps for now my University Professor with the same degrees has differing views!!! Not to mention the college i attended before comming to this university had a Ph.D that disagrees with my current professor. The best thing you can do is research info. on your own and base your own conclusions on what you have read, seen, experienced!!!! Just because professors are professors does not mean they are always correct or credible. Don't get me wrong they are experts in their fields but just like Dr. Atkens and all those others who come up with these crazy dieting techniques are all using their knowledge learned, experimentation, and what they feel will help!!! Opinion and sometimes ignorance of info. can sometimes lead professors to make these types of blanket statements. I.M.O "It is better to tell somebody you don't have the answer than to take an educated guess and think you know"

Tell her to prove it! Seriously. Ask for articles and see where she is getting her information.

I can tell you right now she won't be able to come up with anything! I have a masters in biochemistry....and I will be the first to admit, it doesn't mean a heck of a lot. I might be able to understand some of the details of scientific articles better than the average person but big deal. The bottom line (results of the studies) are still the same.

damn straight!

the thing is this..

you work your ass off in the gym. you spend money on supplements and juice. you diet your ass off.. only to jeoperdize potential growth by not consuming enough protein?

makes no sense.

its like dressing up to a wedding with the finest tuxedo, 200 dollar hairdo, only to fuck it up with old shoes.
