i'm having a party today

stilleto

ELITE MENTOR
EF VIP
around 50 or 60 people.

my mother, who has never entertained 'well', has been a nervous wreck all week, even though she doesn't even live in this state.
she's called me to ask me what i'm wearing (i don't know until i get dressed), where i'm going to put the food, what i'm serving (catered), and has asked me about the guest list 10 times, which she wrote down for some reason. She called to say it would be nice if i served roasted chicken. I said that's too messy and she thought of 5 more chicken dishes in it's place, even though i already ordered chicken and wasn't looking for suggestions.

she asked me if i'm nervous (no), and said that if she had one, she would consider taking a valium. i have no idea why. it's friends and family.

Last night she called me frantically and said, "SUGAR!!!" I said, "what?" and she said she remembered artificial sweetener. What about it?
Don't forget it!
I know mom.

then she asked if i wanted her to come early. i said no- the house is totally clean and i don't need help, so she showed up at 9am today (it's a 2 hour drive for her), wearing all white and said she was here to help. Then she asked if i would mind making her an egg for breakfast.

I just came upstairs to shower and on my way up, she yelled, "DO YOU WANT ME TO PUT THE CUTTING BOARD AWAY?"
"no."
"NO?"
"no"
"IT WOULD LOOK BETTER IF YOU PUT IT AWAY."
"I want it out so i can cut up lemons and limes."
"OKAY. WHERE DO YOU WANT ME TO PUT THE BREAD THAT'S ON TOP OF THE FRIDGE?"
"no where."
"YOU'RE GOING TO LEAVE IT THERE?"
"yes."

She's now laying down on my guest room bed because she feels dizzy. I asked if she'd run to my neighbor's house for me and she said she would rather not because she doesn't like her.

i'm totally happy that my mom is here to help.

BTW my mom is like the opposite of neurotic. she pretty much doesnt even talk.

i'd like something in the middle. which is my MIL- she's awesome.
when i was growing up, if my mother had to entertain, it took her 2 days to recover from the stress. she can't relax or take shortcuts (like bagged salad).

Oh, she's been doing another great thing... i reminded her that my son's gf's mom would be here. she just lost her 16 year old son in an accident, so i told my mother to please not bring it up. She's still very upsettable and doesn't like to cry in public. my mother looked at me blankly and said ok. I said, "are you sure you understand?"
Yes, yes. i get it, she said.
So last week, she turned to my son's gf and asked if both her brother's were coming to the party.
? WTF???
I said, "MOM! remember??? A's brother just passed away last month?"
She said, "OH, i'm so sorry. i thought it was your mother's brother."
Later I had to remind her that the boy who dies was my son's best friend... why would he be best friend's with his gf's UNCLE??

i know she's going to say something totally wrong today.

Give her a couple of those .25 footballs she will be like a new woman

i just went downstairs. the cutting board was put away and I don't know where the bread is.
Of course it was.... my mom does the exact same kind of thing.....

Largest group I've entertined is 20... was pretty easy there are many ways to cut corners on things like dessert, salad, etc

I'd give her 3mgs of xannies crushed up in some of her food

take her inside on the couch to sit down 10-20 min later and she'll be out of your hair for a good 5 hours

j/k

how are we doing besides this?

Sounds like my grandma acted when she was still alive. My mom if I told her I didn't need any help would probably show up late to the party.

Cheers,
Scotsman
