Ignorance is bliss? Is it?

Ever think about it?

Imagine not knowing what you do now. Not going to college or having a good job... not knowing so much about steroids or recreational drugs.... not being able to analyze the quality of recent movies... not being able to debate shit on this board... etc. Do you think you would be happier or far more depressed?

I'm thinking about it now.

Right now I wouldn't be in college. I'd be working a 9-5'er for 7 or 8 bucks an hour that requires more physical toil than mental prowess. I'd easily be able to dismiss all recreational drugs with: "drugs kill braincells" and be done with it. I'd easily be able to say "steroids shrink your nuts" and be done with any argument because I'd be too stupid to comprehend any kind of retort. Movies? Take a great movie like Memento and dismiss it with "it went backwards. that's so stupid." Or how about our fun debates on this board? Higher income earners get more benefits from a tax cut? Well, that's not fair because they are lucky to be rich. bah-hah how do you like that? They are more fortunate. They don't need all that money. I should get it cause I'm "less fortunate." Or how about being terrified at the mere sight of a computer and just saying "I'm too dumb for that" and never having to worry about slow e-mail retrieval or a blue-screen-of-death.

Would you be happier? You wouldn't know any better. You'd know nothing of what's really out there, but you'd know everything about what's immediately available to you. Isn't the real reason you're unhappy about something now because you have goals and know that there's something more out there?

What's the whole logic behind the expression "happy as pigs in shit" anyway? Probably the fact that pigs don't know anything aside from rolling around in shit, and that is all they need out of life.

What do you think?

Compared to many animals pigs are actually quite smart. The expression refers to the very fact that pigs enjoy rolling in mud. The mud rolling is actually done for a reason (to protect their skin) so it is no mindless past-time.

Let's just say that about 80% of Americans are already VERY "happy."

You are preaching to the chior, my friend.

But seriously - I'm looking at the ramifications of such a decision. The question is not really: "would you be happier if you were ignorant" but rather "would you be happy making that decision." Hard to explain really.. think of it this way.

Ok - you decide to allow someone to wave his magic wand and make you a typical American. You are suddenly as happy as a pig in shit because your sole aspirations in life are work 9-5 and drink beer/watch sports on weekends till you collect social security at 65 and die a few years later. Yeah - after that you will be super happy cause you'll have no idea what you've lost... but can you sit here today, as enlightened as you are, and say "I'd be happier if that's the way things were and I'd be happy to make that decision right now."

I don't think I could do it. Along with all the stress and shit I have now, there are also a lot of things that make me happy that I surely would not have or even THINK of having were I a puny mortal.

I'll ignore the obvious fact that you it is very important to you that wealth is achieved. It is even more important that you not pay heavy taxes on this income. People that oppose further tax cuts for the super rich right now are not necessarily for income redistribution.

They may be realists who recognize that W is plunging us headlong into a financial crisis by massive, uncontrolled spending while simultaneously reducing income. Voodoo economics to say the least. Personally....I think we should all pay MORE tax until there is no deficit. Either that or cut some of the mind boggling waste out.

Yes.....ignorance is bliss. Looks like we may be headed into even greater numbers of blissful people.

I don't find the acquisition of insane amounts of wealth to be very important to me. I don't want to be the next Bill Gates or even the next <insert rich guy who everyone wants to be here>. I just want enough to retire at an early age and live the rest of my life as I was living it while I was working and still have enough left to leave to my children who I hope will not have to work as hard as I had to work to achieve what I'll have. I don't need $300K a year to be happy. I want work to be a part of my life - not my life entirely.

Now back to economics... I don't think more taxes is a good idea because that money will undoubtably go towards mind boggling wasteful spending as did the money years ago. Clinton is responsible for the largest tax increase in US history, and look at what it got us. By cutting out the wasteful spending, we'll have enough money left over with the present tax code (or even a smaller one) to eliminate any kind of deficit. Stealing people's money at the point of a gun is a crime for everybody except the Federal Government. Does anyone else see something wrong with that? Obviously not - since they are enjoying this blissful ignorance of which I speak while I sit here having my money stolen every year with no defense against it.

Sounds like somebody took too many happy pills this morning :)

Nope - just snowed in with four kids ages 10 1/2 down to 6 none of which owns snowpants!

"Can we go outside?"

NO

"Why not?"

Because the snow is too deep, your pants will get wet, the snow will get into your boots and you will be back in the house, tracking snow and shlush ALL OVER within FIVE MINUTES!

"No we won't."

....1 1/2 minutes later.....

"Can we go outside?"

NO

"Why not?"

BECAUSE I SAID SO - THAT'S WHY!!!

Now multiply this event by about 35.... and that doesn't even bring us to lunch time.

LOL

My answer is -

I want to be smart enough to know which things I would be better off being ignorant of, and then I'd like to be ignorant of those things and those things only.

Let the kids outside!!!

My dogs been out like 10 times ,the stupid bastard loves it.

As to the topic,What if you knew you were ignorant? Many Americans are aware of this fact and repress it every chance they get.

Mad

sometimes i wake up feeling exactly the same thing.....I look at my cat....and think about the shit storm i am going to have to deal with that day...and all the moral dilemmas I will have to face....and I wish I could just sleep all day...like my cat.

this is why I like to occasionally escape th\o the world of either:

a. alcohol
b. video games
c. more often than not - sex.

you just need a mental break evey now and then...

They "roll in shit" as you so eloquently put it because a pig's sweat glands are relatively ineffective in lowering their body temperature, so they seek relief from the heat by wallowing in mud or..."shit". What does this have to do with ignorance and bliss. I have no idea, but, it probably doesn't have anything to do with Nathan inserting apples, oranges, pears, watermelon and canteloup in to Nature Boy's ass hoping he shits out fruit salad either.

LOL -

Trust me when I tell you that the ends do NOT justify the means. You only have to open and close a door.... It's a little more complicated with the two legged kind!

HEhehehehehehehehheee

And Frack - today the magic color is : GREEN

warik it sounds like the whole concept here is if someone is content or not. most everyone has a certain level of contentment in one aspect of thier lives.

now take 2thicks post here for example. its clearly a cry out to desperately try to convince people on this board that he's better than other people. as with most disfunctions thier is a root cause for his clearly apparent constant self appraisal by way of always being judgemental of others intellectual capabilities. you'll find that people do this in all aspects of life. its either i am biggger than you, better looking than you, smarter than you, make more money than you, etc. etc. etc. these people are very easy to spot on this board. as with all of it this cracks me up.

p.s. where did the 80% figure come from other than the fact that when making such statements it is always better to use some kind of number.

I think that being the genius and deep thinker that I am brings me much trouble. Maybe I would choose to be dumber if it would make my life more simple.

I was brilliant at 24 - I think you become more and more stupid as you become older and if I can equate stupidity with ignorance, no ignorance is not bliss. Well at least not for me, no it is not bliss, thankyouverymuch.

Nahh. I'd be unhappy in that case, and i'm unhappy in this case. I'm never satisfied.

That's because you don't have a bunch of little urchins throwing grapes at you while you bumble to yourself blissfully in the corner. LOL

Yesiree Bob, nothing like a bunch of little kids to suck out your grey matter to make you TRULY appreciate ignorance.
