Do you and your spouse have joint bank account/credit cards, etc?

Also, not necessarily just for the married folks, but who here still balances a checkbook? Doers anyone even still write checks/use a check register??

Yes we do - in fact we don't have any individual accounts of any kind.

We do balance our checkbook, but not on paper in a register. We use Quickens... We have a caught one or two bank mistakes, so it's a good system so far.

I write checks for mail-in bills. I don't do the whole online payment stuff.

Also I use cash when possible. I hate check cards and such. If more people used cash we wouldn't have all the scams and identity thefts we currently do.

I'm old fashioned if you haven't noticed.

why are you posting in here...you're never getting married.

no to the first question, separate everything (except for her mobile phone, which I oddly pay, don't know how that happened, but she pays my gym membership so it seemed kinda reciprocal)

I wrote my last check back in Dec 2000

I still balance my account, well, Micorosoft Money does it for me anyhow

that's ok. that's why we have options. you can choose to use whichever option suits your personal needs.

Are you a super hero by chance?

If so, is your power the ability to take something very simple and make it even more simple ?

Awesome!

oh yeah, still write checks sometimes, when I am paying people personally, but mostly use debit cards. Balance everthing w/ Micro money.

Everything is together. The wife hates numbers and stuff and doesn't really care. "You take care of it" lol OK She really has no idea what we pay what we have... anything. Ehh, no matter, I'm cool with it and like finances.

We have a checkbook but I pay for everything with a cashback cc. I get back about $600 a year with it, so it's good for extra money. Why not. Then the bill for the CC comes at the end of the month and I pay with one check for all our bills, or most of them because the cc doesn't allow all charges.

I wish I could pay my mortgage with a cc. lol Mo cash back...

So, I write maybe 3 checks a month... I don't know. Maybe more, but it's cool. Oh, and I actually pay by phone sometimes and avoid the checks altogether. The pbp gets taken out of our checking account.

We have dolphin pics on our checks. nowedon'tha!

joint bank accounts are a sure way to have fights you's rather not have (fighting over money is gheigh)

So, you could share genitals but not bank accounts?

If I ever do get married I will have a joint bamk account in which we both contribute a portion of mine and hers paycheck for emergency funds, travel, and mutual expenses.

We will also have our own separate accounts which we can manage however she and I choose.

I guess so.

Point is, I know exactly where the money goes. Wifey simply spends spends spends knowing there is enough in her account to go...

I could not possibly keep my account like that, people that knows me know I'm very methodical

I hate to really get into a debate about this but ... lol ... how can you look your "lover" in the eyes and tell them you love them so much, forever... blah blah BUT.... we have to have separate accounts? I don't understand that.

Of course it doesn't hurt anyone and it's all good, but I just don't understand the reassoning, that's all.

"Just in case we split up?" Is that what you tell her?

We do pretty much the exact same thing at our house. We funnel just about every expense through our cash-back rewards CC and we get roughly $750 if not more every year free because we do it this way. I like it.
And also, Lumberg handles all the finances and he has everything set up on automatic payment so we never write a check for a bill ever. Unless I dont have cash on me for the parking garage at which time I have to write a check - they dont take CC's/

High fives dude. We rock. Mostly me, but you can come along. lol jk Awesome.

We use the Amex cashback card. No anual fee, up to 5% cashback. Starts at 1% or something and it depends on where you use it. Sometimes I think a miles card would be better, but I don't know anything about them and I'm too lazy to find out. lol

Ours is a Yahoo VISA with rewards (not actual cash) back. We basically get ~$750 a year (more more I dont know) in rewards based on how much we spend and its a Supercertifcate where you can redeem it for Gift Cert for various merchants (lots!). We are getting ready to pay for our 8 day hotel stay in Chicago area with our rewards/

Oh, in that case, we get double money if we decide to not get the cash. We can spend it in a few stores for double value. It's cool. I like cash. It's so much easier. It's all about convenience. I love convenience. It's like getting a blowjob while laying down. omg. I love giving them.

What! jk

joint account..
cash on hand needto usually carries it.

Never use checks, always atm, cash, and pay bills with money orders...checks take too long to clear!

we have joint everything. . .i do however have one credit card that's in my name only. . .it's the one i use when i'm buying her gifts. . .i also use it for gas cause it gives me a 5% discount at the pump. . .

i'm embarrased to admit this (because of what i do for a living) but, i only reconcile my bank account like once a year. . .i have online banking and i pay some of my bills online, i also scan my account activity once a week to make sure there's no funny transactions :whatever:

my wife has hers, i have mine, and we have a joint one for bills. we each take X amount for our spending money every week, the rest goes into the joint account.

works far better then one joint account when she would just spend MORE MONEY.

combined everything (except work related things for tax purposes) and i don't balance anything- i just look at my statement online whenever I need to see something.

What's a good cash back card to have?

I use a Citi visa card, goto their site and check out their different cards. Mine gives 1% on everything and 5% back on gas and groceries

That's my ideal situation too.

Joint accounts. She spends all of her money, so she just wanted me to handle all of it. I write checks for my credit related accounts because I got pwned by billpay with my bank. I got all of these notices saying my insurance, cell, gas, etc were late and at risk of being shut off or cancelled. The bank said "no, you're set up and ready to go" 2 months being set up and nothing came out? "Sorry. It must have been an error". If my house or card were on that, I would have been 60 days late. Not so good. I don't balance my checkbook either. I usually keep enough in there that I don't have to worry about it.

yeah I guess its to each his own. it all really depends on what kind of habits your spouse has. My husband has no qualms about me spending money because Ive always lived a very simple lifestyle. I dont over spend. Im not a shopper.

It's just like find whatever works best for the two people involved.

Also, it's very easy to have ideas in mind for how you WANT things to be once you get married, but until you actually are at that point, you wont know for sure what will work best.

Smurf, please stop posting on my threads.

Seriously, good points made here. I do see now the reasons for having separate accounts. props to all. It is a matter of each couple's own characteristics.

Do you have to recharge after each use of those super powers or is it a constant thing?

Joint acct since married (17 years)

w/carbons, internet, etc, the checkbook ledger is obsolete. I don't use it but Mrs. LH does.

Let's see, we have a joint checking/savings, we share the major credit cards (he has a few store cards I don't have and vice versa) and he has his own private checking account, buuuuuuutttttt big caveat, I'm the household banker, he has no idea how much money is in the account, and how much of that is earmarked for withdrawals (this week is a good example, we've literally got $2,200 earmarked to go out in the next 48 hours). If he wants cash he used to have to call me and I had to go check my numbers. Now if he wants extra cash he just taps his account. I rarely have reason to use cash.

Check register, I don't keep a paper one anymore, I use a spreadsheet register I created, I actually extrapolate our (rough) expenses usually six months in advance, nothing would get paid otherwise. And it utterly drives me totally bugshit when the numbers in my spreadsheet don't balance out.

I pay 95% of all bills through our bank's online bill pay service, I write a few checks when I want to have convenient record of the payment.

olollloololol...

You should probably get off the internet dood... it's unsafe here.

I have my own savings & checking left over from years & years ago.....

We also have a joint checking & savings......I pay all the bills & yes, I balance the checkbook down to the penny.....I also do our budget biweekly based on his payday and record all income & expenses on an old account general ledger sheet.....

Should we get too close to possibly "overspending" - I "shut off" access to the account....ie - don't spend anything....

i would never do the joint bank account. it seems like itd be too easy to spend the other persons money. i wouldnt want a woman buying fancy shoes becuase I worked my butt off.

also, if someone gets a divorce i'd imagine splitting the assets would be a lot easier if there were seperate bank accounts. also i would definately do pre-nups beforehand. ive heard about guys getting burned and i dont want that to happen to me.
just when you think you trust and love someone you can be betrayed im sure.
