Ibuprofen before training...good or bad?

kiosk

New member
I took 200mg Ibuprofen this morning along with my thermo....it felt a lot better, I was able to crank out more volume and felt more power, specially close to fatigue...is this good or bad idea for every training session?

i personally never take any outside assistance are far as pharmaceuticals go for lifting. in my experience, pain killers has always screwed with my head technique wise when doing snatches/c&j and such, though i will admit i only took them when i had a fever or sore throat or something. to each his own.

it's not a problem to take things like that to help you when you are sick or aching really bad, but DO NOT TAKE THEM ALL THE TIME. you don't want to have to depend on a substance to get through your work out, plus, pain killers are taking away vital sensory information, even if it is just pain. pain is just another way your body tells you that something is wrong - don't kill the messenger.

agreed great post

200mg is a very low dose. I think that 600mg is fairly standard for any kind of real pain (doesn't the bottle suggest 400mg every 4-6 hours?).

Ibuprofen can help to keep away some inflammation in the joints but in my experience it isn't going to do near as much for muscles or muscular injuries.

It can have a negative affect on the liver (similar to taking oral AAS) and can also "slightly" dehydrate you. I'm really big on using muscle rub creams pre-workout, elbow/knee/wrrist sleeves if needed, and using anti-inflammatories a few hours post workout if really needed.

But...if you have some pain/injury that you are needing to work THROUGH...do what it takes.

yes Im not ever planning on taking more than the lowest 200mg dose....but if it helps me storm thru my workout I think is considerable. I going to try it for a couple more sessions just to make sure it wasnt a "fluke"

I understand I dont want to become addicted to this but I think the risk is low....

anything over 200 mgs will inhibit protein sythesis in my opinion and experience

how did you "experience" decreased efficiency in protein synthesis?

the point is kiosk, to make a very clear distinction between general pain that comes with lifting and bad pain that may point to or lead to future injury.

i just started using rub a535 pre-workout, works great. is there anything stronger though? i'm using the extra strength stuff and it's not enough. it's not like i'm a big guy either :)

muscle would not grow and soft tissues seemed to heal less quickly

Are you sure of this?

Becasue I sometimes have real bad headaches (borderline cronic) and Ibuprofen is the only thing that seems to help.

I ahve some migrane medacine I am goign to start tonight, but for the quick releif the Ibuprofen is the only way I would be able to work out some days.. or function in general for that matter.

I actually like Icy-Hot or the Wal-Mart generic brand. My parents ship it to me from the USA here. Some of the best stuff is that Zostrix-HP...about $13 a tube but it lasts forever and gets HOT!!! Not a summertime thing (especially here in the Summer).

What I do after a long Event day is come home, get in a nearly unbearable hot bath tub. Soak for 10 minutes minimum, stand up and cover any painfull joints/muscles in Icy-Hot and let it sit/catch on fire for as long as I can stand it (about 5 minutes or so). You would be suprised how much this makes the pain go away. Then I'll get back in the tub for a while...

Seriously...it works wonders post workout.

I like popping 2 alieve tabs before I hit the gym, nothing else seems to do crap. I always have a better lift when taking some.

ob believe me, even with the 200mg i can very well feel even the fatigue pain...the 200mg just seem to let take my head off it for a bit.

I going try the icy-hot patches too.....
