I wasn't expecting to hurt THERE....

I recently have challenged myself to significantly increase my strength. I’ve been really pushing myself in the gym and seeing some great gains….

BUT….I have discovered that as I am lifting heavier and heavier, and straining more than ever before, my NECK has been really hurting! I don’t mean just a little discomfort, I mean can’t turn my head or look up fast kinda pain…

What can I do to alleviate this pain? Can I do something while I am lifting to avoid hurting so bad afterwards? Does it eventually go away?

Thanks!

Are you doing a lot of ab work??

When I started doing deads, I remember my neck being sore all the time. Next time you do deads, look at your neck in the mirror. As you watch your neck turn into a stringy, veiny mess from straining so hard, you'll have your answer.

I've had this exact problem, and I determined that the cause was that I was doing too much trap work. The trap muscles extend all the way up to the base of the skull, and can cause alot of tightness in the neck if they are worked too often or not stretched enough.

What does your program look like?

Do you ever pull your head up and back in the vulture position when training? Some people do this when they are straining at the end of a set. You gotta keep your head/neck neutral if this is the case.

whats a good way to stretch your traps?

I sometimes sit on a bench, grab the bench and lean backwards this stretches a bit but im not satisfied.
