I think I need a change....

my workouts suck. I've been trying all kinds of programs over the past 6 months or so and just nothing is gelling. I think I'm just gonna do pushups, pullups, situps and cardio for about 6 months and give my joints and body a "rest" from busting out 135 on the bench. This beast is getting tired...and apparently old before my time.

no, seriously, I need to change things up and get back to basics. More of a military routine. For some reason, weights haven't been "calling" me for a long time and I need to lose some BF, get more lean.

You could do some track workouts. Concentrate on flexibility, core, and stabilization for a while. I used to do that before I let myself go for a bit, and it really helped. It keeps you fast and agile too, not just weight training fit.

i like to change up a couple of times a year. . .one of my favorite moves is to do three body parts a day. . .light weight, high reps. . .hit each body part twice a week. . .used in combination with a good cardio routine, it hypes my fat-burning big time. . .example. . .monday. . .chest, back and bi's. . .one set of 10 pull-ups, one set of 10 reps with 205lbs on the bench, one set of ten standing barbell curls with 100lbs. . .wash, rinse, repeat. . .three times, then pick out three more exercises. . .do the same. . .move quickly to keep up your heart rate. . .18 sets in 20 to 30 min plus 20 min of cardio. . .four times a week for 3 to 6 weeks. . .

How old are you bro?

I'm not old, I'm in my mid 30's. I have had some back issues over the past 1.5 years and my right knee has been giving me some problems as of late. I think my back issues are behind me (hardy har) and my knee is cool as long as I ice it each evening. I was going pretty hard on the leg workouts as my calves especially are my major weak point size wise and I wanted more squat power bigtime. I think I just need to stop going balls to the wall with iron, the heavy stuff will ruin my body if I keep going. My mindset is also changing to less "go big or go home" to get fit and eat right. With a baby on the way, time is also a major consideration. I've been considering buying an elliptical trainer and this;
http://www.home-gym-exercise-equipment.com/product_details.asp?prod=P_Power_Stand_II

and just getting rid of the squat rack and bench press, lat pull down, etc, etc. It's been awhile since I just kept it simple and I desire that more and more. Maybe I'm getting old before my time, I don' t know.

I've changed my eating over from "muscle muscle muscle and protein protein protein" to more of a well rounded diet and I just feel better, much better.

When I first started this... 7 years ago... i was trying to loose about 30lbs of fat...

I tried to eat no fat and very low carbs...

I learned since then... I felt like crap all the time and didn't even realize it.

I eat right now... 40 / 40 / 20 or there abouts....

My mindset is now about eating a balanced diet. I don't kill myself to eat low fat this and low carb that. I just don't give in to krispy kream in the morning and eat some egg whites and an oatmeal muffin, and some fruit with coffee instead. The donut may taste better but I feel better with a well rounded breakfast.

My workouts is where it's at though. My body just feels better when I workout, but don't go heavy, but instead do more body weight excercises. It's great to have muscle but my knees/back weren't made to always be ATF squating year after year after year. I really am convinced I'm wearing it out prematurely. I'm not a pro competitor so why go thru all that? I want to be fit and I like having mucles and seeing a good figure when I look in the mirror, but I'm not cutler I've realized. *GASP*

my family has bad knee genes. . .my mom had hers replaced at 65. . .i'm only 42 and mine are SHOT. . .bone-on-bone. . .i'm sure that squatting 500+ lbs for years didn't help. . .there is definitely some truth to what you're saying. . .

Maybe there is. My dad is 60 and has the knees of a 30 year old. He laughs at me when I squat and stuff and all he has ever done was a military type workout, no weights except body weight. My knees aren't bad...YET. I just see what can be and think it's time to change stuff up to still stay fit, shave some time off my workouts, and work with my body as opposed to bending it to my will. I've always been the type to tell my body what to do. My workouts were "my will be done". I think god knew what he was doing when he made me, so some synergy is in order as opposed to antagonism.

I have plenty of size, and my main goal now is to lose some BF and then just maintain my fitness. I may want to gain a little more muscle when I've stripped off a few more lbs, but thats not a problem for me. My build is such that muscle mass comes VERY easy when I decide to get it, losing BF does not. Thats a very hard goal for me. I want to look good but I realize I'll be no cover model. I'm a blue collar guy that works hard for his money and want to be strong, but I don't need to be lifting 350 lbs on the bench, it's impractical for me anymore for multiple reasons. Plus time is also a factor. I like the idea of coming home and busting out a few hundred pushups, 50 or so pull ups, a couple hundred situps and then just busting out an hour on the elliptical. Do that 3, maybe 4 times a week and I think I'll be good. That gives me more time to work, spend time with family that will soon be expanding by one, and I can simplify my home gym and drop my gym membership all together.

I'm just sick of doing bench, then incline, then tris, then the next day doing back and then bi's , etc, etc. It's just old and no matter how I try and mix it up, it's just not at all appealing. It's a major drag and it's affecting the quality of my workouts.

then take off 2 weeks. really- no lifting at all.
when you come back, you'll be refreshed and aching to lift.

Well, 3 months ago, I took almost a month off and I never wanted to see another weight. lol It kinda backfired on me but I forced myself to get back into it.

super compensation style and 1700mg gear/week

nothing makes me more of a fucken animal.

I can't believe I forgot the name of it..... but you should try the workout where you start with 15 reps on every lift for two weeks, then 10 reps, then 5 reps... while going up 5 pounds a workout or something like that. Then at the end, you take a 10 day rest and start at 15 reps all over again. I hear these workouts are really easy while doing the higher reps and still give you strength and growth.
