hey guys i just got back from the gym and while doing close grip bench i noticed a pain in my left pec area, above my arm pit, i tried to stretch it out and it still hurts like a bitch, if i make a fist with my left hand i cant even press it into my right palm without it hurting like a bastard, nor can i switch hands and take the pressure from my right fist....what might this be, i'll post a pic of the area in just a second

That's where I'm getting pain too, except with incline press. I'm hearing a pop though. It takes about two weeks for me to heal, just can't go as heavy as I want...sux

It's too preliminary to say.......but it sounds to me like a strain, rather than a tear.

If you tore the pec you'd KNOW it........pain, swelling, bruising.....etc.

See a doc and get a professional opinion....

Looks like something minor....Could it posibly be the rotator cuff.....

Eighter way it is minor(for now)....if you want it to heal and be healthy take a good 1-2 weeks off ,take Glucosamine with MSM, you can use DMSO, or vital therapy coper cream.

Believe me DONT TRAIN THRU IT....and make sure you warm up ALWAYS.

I learned this the hard way. Hope you dont have to.
If you heal that puppy, it will most likely be ok. I would after some time off go light on it increasing 15lbs or so per session.

Keep us posted bro,

Hopefully it was just a strain. . . torn pec like the bro said you would def know, you said above the pec right ? is it in your shoulder then? if it is you could have possibly strained your rotator cuff. I had to have surgery on mine five years ago for a bad tear from a football injury. Not fun stuff. Like Polfa said, dont' train through it, at least until you find out what it is. It might be gone in a couple days who knows. If it lasts any longer than that, I would definitely go to a good sports doc. Make sure you ice it after you work out, and do it a couple times a day for 20 min. for the next couple days.

Div.,
I'm not saying your wrong or anything, but what if it's only a mild pec tear.If it is,then you might not definatly know about it if you see what I mean.I too have injured my right pec/shoulder area, and I think it might be a mild pec tear. Not something to make my arm go black(or any other colour),but enough to cause pain when I bench.Do you think it could be a mild pec/shoulder tie in tear.Just from what I told you(I know it's different to know if you can't see it).On and off I've had to take about six months off all together. The thing is,it only hurts when I try to bench or shoulder press, but not when I'm not in the gym.

I'm guessing that when you feel the side of your pec, and start following the edge of the muscle up into your armpit, you feel a little indentation in your muscle (that's always there, not a sign of injury). Your pain is right in that little indentation, yes? If so, it's ok -- you strained a pec. Bad news is, leave it alone or it will plague you on all pressing and chest movements as well as things like dumbell pull overs and such.

If you had torn a pec, you normally will see a visible difference in the shape of your chest. Also, the particular band you tore would be balled-up and spasming like crazy inside your chest. If you have *that* kind of pain... constant spasms that get worse at night, then you may have torn a pec, but I doubt that.

Oh, and if it's in that indentation on the side of your chest, then no it isn't a rotator cuff :)

Take time off to let it heal most importantly. if it still hurts in a couple of weeks go see an orthopediest. I just recovered from shoulder surgery. Why does everyone hear shoulder and assume its rotator cuff? (not putting anyone down). there are more than a dozen things that can go wrong in the shoulder (its more common for people to tear their glenoid labrum(not sure how to spell it) but thats that i had repaired). Back to your question, hopefully it is just a pec strain, if it was torn bad you would have almost immediate brusing and swelling. just relax and dont pust it because it will get worse.

i feel like im hijacking my own thread, catch, you actually wrestle? or is that just a name...

anywayz great thing about where i live NJ metropolitan area, is the plethora of good doctors, so i have an appointment with a leading sports doc in about an hour, i'll keep you guys updated,

oh yea, karma to u guys

"I feel like I'm hijacking my own thread." LOL.

Yeah bro.,I do wrestle - Freestyle,Greco and Catch wrestling, the best groundfighting system there is!!!!!!!!!!!! Tony Cecchine rules!!! I also box and do martial arts .How 'bout you??

I had the same problem. I ended up tearing my labral muscle in my shoulder. Its known as a slap lesion. Honestly I would lay off the weights and focus on stretching with rotator cuff strengthening movements right now. It won't hurt to get an xray or an mri done either if the pain does not subside. Good luck

I'm waiting for an MRI scan for my back(i've had back trouble for a ot longer). When they do the scan, will it show what's wrong with my pec/shoulder - tear, cuff or whatever??Even though their looking for problems with my back??

know, it will only show whats going on in your back(it is a localized picture).
Also, uncommonly known, MRI are not completely accurate. Any doctor will tell you, that it will just give an idea of whats going on. Sometimes completely accurate, sometimes not at all. My orthopedist said about 60% accurate. on my shoulder, the radiologist(who reads and reports the findings to the orthopedist) said the MRI showed a completey torn supra spinatis tendon(one of the tendons that make up the rotator cuff) when he got in there, that was completely fine and my labrium was torn, which did not show up on the MRI

It is still soon enough to ice the area to reduce inflamation if you are not doing it already. You can ice the outer pec 4 times daily for the next 36 hours (so six more times).

Take a one week layoff as your body can then concentrate all of it's energy into the trashed muscle sheath (partial tear in the pec muscle wall).

Cardio with moving arms (like cross trainer and rower) will help it heal quicker as they will allow the muscle to stay active in a controlled manner and not tighten up as the scar tissue forms on the rupture.

Do things right and you should feel great in a month. Consider yourself luck to just have to wait a month to train again. Some people get accute injuries that sideline them for YEARS. So dont fret about being out for a month and blow it all by trying to rush back.

I strained my right quad/adductor 3 1/2 weeks into my last cycle, whilst training legs 3 days after doing rack deads with 600lbs. Fucked the cycle completely, but I'm alive to fight andother day.

Probably not a pec tear in that region. More than likely it's a small rotater cuff muscle under the anterior delt. Those muscles are pretty small and the close grip bench is not something you usually tear a pec on.

BTW...you do not want to use ICE...you want to INCREASE INFLAMATION not use anti-inflamatory. Anti-inflamatory= Surgery later. The point of inflamation is it increases blood flow to the muscle and thus repairs.

Docs told me i would never lift again without surgery. ZYGLAMAIL a great bro..helped me thru this with some good advice....he told me what i told you..plus even recomended some treatments where they inject a liquid into the affected area to increase inflmation. I didnt nee dit as the injury heeled itself with time.

I reccomended ice immediately after the injury and for up to 48 hours. This stops the body from over-reacting and causing excessive brusing - the body does not always know best, that's why we have doctors and physios and chiropractors, etc... to help it along. I agree that using anti-I's after 48 hours is probably more harm than good.

well heres the analysis....partial pec tear, nothing too serious, no surgery, no rotator cuff injury, but he told me to take it easy for a week or two then slowly work it out with light weight otherwise since im a meathead it will lockup or atrophy will occur
