Screw TurboTax I'm going to a tax preparer ... I totally give up, another $69 wasted ... I've been working on the taxes since 5:30 this afternoon and the final number comes to us owing over $4,000 ... which is about $2,000 more than last year ... which is really sucky since our gross income WENT DOWN by almost $4,000 ...

... bullshit ... bullshit ... bullshit ... too rich to be poor, too poor to be rich.

I know, I hated it when I tried doing on my own at the time when we had our own business. Better off take it to a tax-person that you trust. Fuck H&R block too

well, if you were any closer to MIchigan, I would recomend you a lady, she is awsome. :( Ask around people that have businesses and see if they can give you a number. Its usually a independent person. I'm sure you know all the things that you can deduct from your taxes.

Run that bitch again. I'm sure you left some deductions out. :verygood:

He gets paid on a W2

I get paid on a 1099 ...

Problem one is that I don't HAVE a lot of legitimate expenses associated with my "job." I don't really think of it as a "business." I'm wondering if there would be any benefit to incorporating ... it's ridiculous, it's not like I make that much money.

And the other problem is that we pay a disgustingly high child support and his (insert offensive adjective here) of an ex won't let him claim one of the kids ... that's what just kills us. We're paying taxes on this money, but we get no use of it, and can't claim any deductions for it; it's a $13,000+ hole in the boat. It's like paying a second mortgage.

Shit, we're paying out about 17% of our GROSS in child support ... he had such a crappy lawyer in the divorce ... he should have gotten it in the decree that he claims one of them, that's all. That would offset everything ...

I like turbotax but all I have is one income source and no dependants, childsupport, business taxes, etc. Took me 20min to file and had my return before the end of January.

Cheers,
Scotsman

The problem is just that ... it's asking me shit like what kind of accounting method I use and I'm like WHAT?! ACCOUNTING METHOD? Business travel expenses, entertainment, advertising?!?

Expenses associated with "business" in 2005:

1. Electricity to run computer, lamp and equipment: ???$$$
2. Internet access once or twice per day to look up terminology: ???$$$
3. Telephone line for 5 minutes to upload files: ???$$$
4. 2 business machines purchased on Ebay for a total of $210
5. Reference materials: $30 (maybe)

I need a smart person, that's all there is to it, my head hurts and I'm so frustrated ... gotta start calling CPAs, maybe I'll talk to the owner of the company I sub for, see if he can recomend someone ...

BTW, thanks everyone for listening to my rant :qt:

You need a professional; you're clearly missing many business issues. Even as a sole proprietor you can deduct much more than that.

Sucks on the child support, see a tax lawyer on that sounds fishy.

Spending $500 now might let you save a few thousand.

good luck.

Sorry, I'm not up on US taxes. However, 'accounting method' just means do you use accrual or cash-basis accounting. Accrual - when you bill somebody, you 'make' the money and you're just waiting for them to pay you the cash. Cash-basis - you don't show that you 'made' money until you've got the money in your hot little fist.

An accountant is a girl's best friend though!

Yep, problem solved ... sort of. Basically admitting I don't know it all and accepting that I've made an utter botch up of stuff for quite some time.

Filing extension, sending check for rough estimate; abdicating responsibility. We will be taking LARGE quantities of stuff to a CPA recommended to me by a woman who works in the office I work out of. She sent her father there, gives me a warm feeling.

The child support ... man we've tried with that one. Things will change shortly, one kid is about to graduate and turn 18 and the whole case gets reevaluated. What's funny is that it never occurred to their mom that at least SOME of that child support money should have been set aside JUST for the kids (even if she'd only put $5 or $10 a week per kid it would have been enough to buy books ...). No, she was both shocked AND offended when the daughter's guidance counselor asked how much she had put aside for college! I've done a rough estimate, in about 7 years she has received tax free about $90K, but she flat out admits the children have NOTHING in savings, not a single, solitary penny, and she doesn't get why that's wrong.

She's basically told the daughter I want you out of the house when you graduate or start paying rent, and this is a kid who is NOT prepared for the real world by any stretch of the imagination.

God I'm ranting again

sorry to hear that, TurboTax was good to me this year. I`ve been telling everyone about it...
I think it's awesome for standard cases (no complicated deductions or interest, paid on a standard W2). I use it on my son's taxes; like the Scotsman said, takes about 20 minutes start to finish including the submission ...

I even think it's great for NON-standard cases if the user has a bit of experience with bookkeeping.

BUT for a dope like me, odd situations, no bookkeeping experience, uh uh. Balance the household budget is one thing ... depreciation, deductions, allowable expenses
