So I just purchased this kick ass surround sound package and found out that I need an HD DVD player to get the HD capabilities. While I'm shopping for one I notice none of them are below 400.00...wtf? Am I looking at the wrong places? Anyone know where I can get a good deal on one and is any one really better then another? thanks in advance chaps

Best Buy has some for $200-$300, but not sure how good they are compared to the $400+ ones. We were looking at one for 2 something and it supported 1080p. I would check there that had quite a bit to choose from.

Do you have an xbox360?? If so you can just buy that HD DVD player ad on...about $180..usually comes with a remote and a free movie.

hd dvd has lost bro... get a blueray player trust me ont his one

No xbox 360. I have heard about these HD wars and blue-ray possibly monopolizing the industry. Don't these run 400+?

Define "kick ass surround package"

HD audio is a gimmick. The only noticeable differences are between analog and digital. Forget the HD stuff, unless it is concerning video.

I could really give a shit about the HD audio, more concerned about the video. I shopped around for a while looking at all different ones and found the best reviews and most for my money on this one:

blu ray has won, and most hd dvd players under $400 just upscale the dvd to hd and aint the real thing, gotta make sure before you buy .....

We have a Samsung one - it's nice works well.

And as long as you buy the HD cables (which are expensive) you can see the difference (wrong cable looks the same).

There's probably a reason the HD DVD stuff is so cheap now.

Like others mentioned, it may be on it's last leg to Bluray.

Buyer be warned.

You think Blu-ray will win out?

(seriously not being a wise ass)

LOL - this reminds me of when vinyl was on its way out and CD's were in...

I've intentionally stayed away from the HD format wars until it's decided, but from what I am hearing it is strongly leaning that way.

HD-DVD didn't even have a booth at this years CES (Consumer Electronics Show) yet Bluray had a circus of things.

Personally I think having Bluray built into the PS3 was the key to victory. People with the PS3 buy Blurays to watch movies. Microsoft coming up with an add-on HD-DVD drive was a horrible idea. Few people want to buy a $200 peripheral after they just handed out $400 for a console.

It's not completely decided yet, but I say it's getting close.

Ou, that is interesting...

I just hope the Blu-ray players don't have the pain in ass lack of ease to use issues that the regular DVD plays have had (in my experience).

We literally have a box of remotes (a dozen or so) and the only one that doesn't suck is the one from cablevision.

Look to your local cable company for HDMI cables. I work for one and we have them for $11 as compared to $30-100.
