Playing themselves as in cameo appearances? Or are you talking about a character from one show appearing as that character on another show? (e.g. Mork appeared on Happy Days)

It usually happens when one show spins off from another, or two shows made by the same production company. Okay, you're going to think I'm weird, but I'm a TV nut who grew up in the 70s...

I remember there was once a crossover between "The practice" and "Ally McBeal", like a two part thing.

The Gilligan cast made appearances as their original characters on several shows including Baywatch, Side by Side, Roseanne, The Nanny and others.
Frasier on Wings, Cheers and Frasier.
Oscar Goldman on the Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman.
