Seeing as that I still have 98, I've been thinking of upgrading my OS to XP. I'm just not too sure about it yet, as it is still very knew and there are not many drivers out for it yet. Does anyone have it and do you like it? Is it stable like NT? Is it fast or did they load it up with crap like they did with ME....

Thoughts...opinions......

I like it a lot. It's as stable as NT and has great functionality like a 9x machine. But like you said , there's software that isn't compatible as of yet. Also whenever a problem ocurrs, it wants you to send an error report to microsoft which kinda gets annoying. Otherwise I like it. Just like any other NT like OS, they will need to get a service pack out to fix the little bugs in it.

There are two versions of WinXP: home and pro.
Home is based on win98/millenium and pro is based on win2000.
I reccomend you to use win2000 or winXP pro if you have at least
128 mb Ram and 300 MHz processor.

I work in support at MS. All I have to say is stay away from the upgrade.

Actually both versions are based on NT technology. The main difference is with pro you can connect to a domain you cant with HE

What are your resons for saying this? Are you getting overloaded with people calling in with problems or something?

my computer is an AMD T-bird 1Ghz with 256mb PC133 RAM, Asus A7V motherboard, , Geforce2 MX video (w/ 32mb video ram), and 40gb hard-drive.
So I think it can handle its own

yeah the upgrade seems to be bringing down lot of systems. Not one particular part of it either. Just the damn process of doing it.

i have 284MB RAM & an amdk6-3 350 clocked at 400Mhz

will XP (assuming i can steal it off the internet) overload my system.

Drivers you can get from manufactures websites... I had to get one for my scanner... to update it.

As for the 400mz computer... I don't know. I do know that on mine it runs TONS smoother than Win98 does... less problems and so forth.

I have xp - it sucks.
there are security holes in it that it shares with 98 and ME and it is slower than 2K (this is all published in the past week).
I still run it b/c I'm too lazy to switch back to win2kpro (well, I had server before, but disabled most of it since I didn't need it).

it reboots really quickjly, but when it crashes, it won't kill one program like win2k did, it just reboots the system - but quickly. pain in the ass.

I hate it, and I turn off all the fucking eye candy.

you should be allright....if XP is any good, then it will be more efficient with resources. Your ram should make up for your slow prossesor, assuming XP can utilize all that ram. I heard somewhere that windows can only utilize 96 mb of RAM. Of course, if XP is based off of NT, then it should be able to use all of it.

I love it! I have XP Pro and it hasn't crashed since I installed Monday. It's quick, stable, and everything runs perfect. The only thing that hasn't worked was EZ CD creator, but I DLed Nero and I like it better anyway.

I have a geforce2MX400 and I got the newest drivers specifically for xp and now it crashes all the time.

sucks since I'm writing game software and need that sort of stuff.

been too busy to are lately though - and I want a new t1500 geforce3 anyway. that will be on my new system in a few months.

I have it on my back up computer to test it out and so far its been very stable and I did a dsl speed test with it and its over 100k down faster than my other computers on my network. I hear rumors it may do some funny things with the hacked copies but that is prolly all bull. Also there is supposed to be a back door in it. WinMX is another great place to get pir software.
