I just got stung by lightning.

I was walking our dogs before the storm was coming. It was drizzling out and thudering in the distance. Then it started to pour. So I go to the back of the SUV, open the door and the young dog jumps in right away. The older dog takes his time to jump in because he can't jump that high that easily. While my hand is on top of the back door to the SUV, lighting strikes right near us. At about the same time I heard the lightning I felt a shock through my right arm that was on the SUV. The dog jumped in right away cause he was scared. The shock felt a little stronger than static electricity. It scared the shit out of me and I got in the car.

My guess is it struck the ground near us (about a quarter mile away) and we got some of the electricity. Not doing that anymore.

glad you're ok.
btw, thats shocking. :)

I think you're the only one that cares.

I wonder if redguru or samoth know about this.

i am the only one that cares, its true.
its sad, since i don't really care all that much either.

i'm kidding- i haven't seen redguru online yet.

That's totally SWeet. And I'm jealous. The lake usually kills off most storms here, so we gotta drive west to get any good action.

How common is this? I've been electricuted many times by fish tanks. This was minor. I felt it at the end of the door and it almost bounced away from me. Weird as fuck. The lightning came out of the sky right above us but struck far to the left of us.

I've only experienced a small electrical burn while trying to play the part of eletrical engineer at work once.

I've actually never heard of getting something as light as that associated with lightning. I'd say you're luckey, for one ;) . What did the lightning strike? A tree or pole nearby? How far away was it?

I was on one side of the school and it came out right above me but struck down on the other side of the school. I felt the shock at the same time I heard it. I barely saw the ending of the strike. It was about a quarter of a mile away. There is a dull pain deep down in my arm now, almost at the bone.

Reminded me of a great cartoon of a guy with a screw driver all fried.

"Electricity, Faster than the average Jerk"

I know, not funny when it is you. But, feeling it after the strike and with the sound? Sounds more like your car picked it up from the air with that much delay. And considering a Lightning strike may be in excess of 1000 Volts, your tingle was more like a static charge created by the change the lightning made in the air around you. Kind of neat to get that charge, but glad it was only a tingle rather than a jolt.

dude that would be sweet if you got some sweet special powers out of this

el oh el at you admitting playing engineer and then screwing it up!

Have you heard of those people who get struck by lightening several times in their lifetime? Well, research has shown that once someone is struck by lightening or electrocuted badly some other way, their body chemistry changes and makes them much more likely to conduct electrical impulse again. In short, they become a walking, talking lightening rod. So, you will probably get struck again. I would stay inside forever, if I were you.

Have a nice day! =-)

Most likely you got the electrical current that was in that bolt. Some people dont get directly struck by it. If you got struck directly most likely you will have an entry and an exit wound. Whether it be like a ciggerette burn or a scratch, it varies.
Either way it is still dangerous and scary. Glad you are ok

Lightning rods retard lightning strikes using point charges. It really isn't due to conductivity.

Thanks Redguru. You, if anyone, I thought would get the humor in that post. Eh, maybe I'm slipping.

I have days where my analytical side gets up before my satirical. Depends on which way I roll out of bed.
