I just cannot take it anymore. I am seriously distraught here.

:( Yep...it's my job, again. Please hear me out..I need a little support.

I'm 30 and I need a company where I can park it for the rest of my working life. I wanted it to be this one...but it's not working out that way.

I've been here only a year. The company is great, the people are great, my boss is great, the pay is good, the flexibility is wonderful.....but..

....the work itself is NOT so great. I spend a good 7 out of the 9 hours I am here doing nothing. Occasionally I have projects to do, and I'll be busy for a week or 2 and then...nothing, again... :(

My only promotional opportunities are with our parent companies and I would need to relocate.

I just cannot take not having MEANINGFUL work to do. Heck, at this point I would even take meaningless work, if it kept me busy!!!!

I DON'T want to bail after only a year but I'm almost in tears here... :bawling: My boss is on vaca for the next week and a half :bawling:

Anyway. :(

Damn. That's too bad. If I had more life experience with this type of thing, I'd try to give some advice or something. Hopefully your boss can help you improve the situation if you talk to him/here when they get back.

That is tough...I would be thankful that you have a job during this weak slump...which I am sure you are....but have you talked to yout manager about your issues?

VDL - hmmmmm.....maybe consider whether your need to be professionaly fulfilled is more important than the flexible hour/benefits...

I'd talk to my boss when he returns. Tell him how you feel. He has to respect someone who wants to work!

Do you work for a big company? Does this company allow people from different deparmtents to help other's within the company? Perhpas another department COULD use your help. Hey, team work is team work after all.

I'd stick it out a little things seem slow all around. Our company is just starting to pick up again. At the least wait until your boss is back and explain your problem. It does get boring just sitting around though. :)

Couldn't you just work on something non-work related during the times when you don't have anything to do? Start your own business, and do all of the work for it from your current job! You could be making twice as much money. Or, bring books to work, and educate yourself about whatever you want. Maybe take some night classes, and do all of your studying during work hours.

Do you think you could get away with any of those things? If your boss sees you doing non-work stuffr, you can even use it as a way to get his attention that he's not giving you enough to do.

If I were you I would enroll in a graduate degree program that is directly related to your profession, and study at your desk as long as there are not projects to work on. This would benefit you and your company directly.

As far as relocating, in most professions I think those who want to move up have to be willing to, well, move. As a member of the military, relocation is a constant, but I understand that is not easy for some folks.

Good Luck! :fro:

VDL - If I remember correctly, weren't you getting ready to take the GMAT and go for your MBA (no matter what Wodin tried to post about it being a waste of time)?

I'm in a somewhat similar situation (although I do look forward to moving on and out after my degree) - but realize I have another year going part time to get my MBA.

Taking everything into consideration - get your GMAT studying done NOW. Set up most of your tasks, for when you are busy and overloaded with school and work, so that they are routined out and easier to manage. Build your resume (job experience) and get your DAMN MBA on the company time.

Suck it up for a year or two now and reap the rewards later.

You must have the same exact job as I do. Get out, run as fast as you can. A job like that will suck all the life out of you and leave you a bitter, cynical shell of your former self. It's happening to me right now.

Precisely what I needed to hear. I'm going to print that out and keep it in my desk drawer for times like these. Thanks everyone!!!!

LOL! I honestly fear you are right, BG7!

But, if I focus on my education, maybe I'll be ok.

I didn't say it was a waste of time. The article said it is not the stepping stone that most people think it to be.

I have an MBA and an MIS. I got them simply because I was interested in the material. Next year I'm starting work on my phd in econ. why... just something to do, I like the field and It will be fun to teach once I get kicked off the corporate tit.

:)

Peace.

I would advise against that. If you're miserable 9 hours a day like me, the last thing you want is to go to school another 4 hours a day, twice a week. If you try that plan, I fear you will meet your demise.

My job sucks so much energy and motivation from me, I'm afraid I won't be able to put forth the effort to make the grades.

Wodin - peace out. I was just calling attention to your SLAMMING of MBA's in GENERAL.

Bigguns7 - understand and appreciate what you are saying: but as it was alluded to earlier. The current declining job market coupled with what VDL has available makes the time, investment, and little torture now a bit more bareable.

VDL - keep your options open. Just remember - you could find "busy work" at some other job, and then get screwed up trying to keep school, job, and family together. Talk to your boss about some extra work/responsbility when he gets back - but keep your eye on the prize (MBA).

:)
