wonderful Christmas. :)

My computer started making a funny noise (heat sink fan) right before Christmas so I had my nephew who knows a lot about computers look at it. He removed the heat sink and fan and cleaned them up and then put it back in and the computer wouldn't come back up. :(

Thought it might be the graphics card so I bought a new one for $135.00 but that wasn't it. He then took the computer back home with him and put a different processor in it and it fired right up.

Not wanting a slower computer, I bought a new and faster processor and now just waiting for it to come in so I can get my computer back together.

Seems as though as a security measure Windows XP Pro will not let you bring a computer back up after installing a newer processor and we have to zip up all the stuff on the hard drive and wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall everything. Something about the way Microsoft uses all of the original hardware and records the computer's components in order to access the computer is making us do all of that. I don't know if all of that is true but it makes sense that when we replaced the slower processor the computer would make it to the sign in screen and then a prompt box would say it was shutting down for security measures. I don't know and was wondering if that was true and an interesting question for all the computer gurus here.

I thought since I was going to do all of that, I might as well bring all of my applications and programs up to date and maybe add a few things. Don't know when things will get back to normal but I hope everyone has a great New Years.:)

sounds like the old cpu either fried or shifted a bit when he took the old hsf out. try putting the old one back in a few times and seating it properly, theres a good chance itll start working properly.

so long as youre using a cpu that isnt exposed (the old durons were bastards) theres very little chance that youll wreck it putting the hsf on and off, so chances are it moved. tinker. have fun :)

You should be able to slap the new processor in the old system without Windows taking a dump. You might have to let it phone home to Micro$oft to get re-activated, but that's no BFD if you've got a legit XP license.

We tried that several times. We reseated it then tried to bring the system up with no luck. I didn't know the processors were that fragile and would go bad like that.

Mr. db....I do have a legitimate copy of XP pro but it somehow is not recognizing the new processor and it wants to shut everything down. Guess we will just have to go by trial and error until we get it right for now.

I think next time my computer starts making a weird noise, I will just wait until it bursts into flames and burns the house down before I worry about it again.:D

Windows should work ok, once you re-activate it. The CPU is a substantial portion of the system identification that Windows product activation uses to create a unique product id.

Yea, that is what my nephew was telling me and since it didn't recognize the slower processor it was not letting me log into my Windows system.

Maybe after the new processor is installed and everything else is reinstalled, things will return to normal.

Sometimes I absolutely hate computers. :(
