I hear Metallica has a new CD

Well, I was a little excited considering they were hyping it up to be like master of puppets stuff.

Heard a song on the radio today - better than their weak point, lacking intensity of older stuff. They sound tired.

I was hoping they would go back to their roots. Master of Puppets is classic.

I blew out my speakers to this...

I refuse to listen to anything after the black album - and I dont even like that album that much.

instead of the day the never ends it shouldve been called the song that never ends...fuckin horrible

I am listening to it right now actually and love it. To put this in perspective, my favorite band is Tool, Metallica, despite St. Anger, is still my #2. I am seeing them December 15th.

If you are looking for early 80s metal, this isn't it, hence the Razorguns post.

This album was beautifully made. Rick Rubin signed on as Producer and really re-invented their sound.

They came in with 50 or so song ideas, and Rick Rubin worked with them to sort of put these pieces together into songs made up of the best parts.

I have some criticisms of some songs, or parts of songs, but overall its a great album, I can't think of one that has come out in the last 6 months that is better.

Check out the instrumetal piece Suicide and Redemtion, its really cool

I love The Unforgiven III, the main riff is awesome and the solo absolutely kicks ass.

There are songs on there that will take you back as far as Ride the Lightning if you are familiar with their stuff. The biggest influence on this album is themselves and I hear bits and pieces that could have fit on all their albums from Ride the Lightning to Load, not so much from Kill Em All, Re-load, or St. Anger.

Give it a listen and see what you think, I personally think its an awesome rock album and listen to it daily.

You should make this a poll to see which is everyone's favorite metallica album. Only put the old ones so you get good results.

Its absolutely a return to form for them.

That song is from the Black Album, the album that first hooked me on them, but also many of their hardcore fans (e.g. Razorguns) felt was a sellout pop album. Now most people would die for a repeat of that album where every track is a masterpiece.

That is one of the songs I criticize. I think its good, BUT its TWO songs. The fist half and the second half. They sort of mashed two songs together that don't fit. They needed to return to the original riff somewhere near the end to tie it all back in, but they never did and it makes the song feel 'off.'

i really like the beginning to that song

Me too! It reminds me of Fade to Black on guitar and the vocals are awesome, I don't like the 2nd half as much, they should have done something different.

Here are a couple of my favorite tracks

This song fucking kicks ass, the solo is so badass.

and justice for all..... and Black were prob my 2 favorite alltime albums
Same here bro! The Black Album hooked me in high school, freshman year 1991, I was 14, then And Justice for All blew my mind.

I love Ride the Lighnight and Master of Puppetts too, never got into Kill 'Em All. Load dissapointed me, but I got into it. re-load had a couple tracks, so did St. Anger, but it didn't feel like Metallica.

java/wootoom/razor - give that a listen and let me know what you think, reminds me a lot of the Black Album, 5:35 in will crush you!

I was introduced to Megadeth back in high school during wrestling, I considered Metallica too heavy...
I've seen Megadeth live a dozen or so times, I always considered them Metallica light. I never liked Mustaine's vocal style, had they gotten someone else to front the band I probably would have liked them as much as Metallica. Mustaine is one of the best metal guitarists hands down.

They were very different than AC/DC..which was the mainstream. They were the one band I could guarantee was going to be played at school dances.

YouTube - ACDC - Who Made Who
hahaha i find AC/DC to be a novelty, all their songs so similar, but if it works for ya it works! Have you seen them live? They fire those loud fucking cannons!

They put out a really good live DVD a few years ago too.

Come on...MoP is one of the greatest thrash metal songs ever. For me, it IS the best, but I would think it's a universal top 3. There won't be many more songs that will come close to MoP, or MoP the album for that matter. MoP just has everything in its 8 minute journey, and does it all with excellence. An awesome opening chromatic riff, unforgettable interlude, and fast aggressive soloing is all done well, and done with taste for that matter. At no point through that song do you get bored, because it never stays in one place for too long. I think they tried to recapture that with The Day That Never Comes, but like somebody else said, the second part of the song starting with the breakdown just doesn't make sense. Gratuitous soloing is not a good thing, and it's one of the reasons we haven't really seen solos for a long time. They're almost making a comeback, but it will take time. Too many bands got into the habit of throwing in a 3 minute shred fest just for kicks, and that doesn't work. MoP threw in a shred fest in a part of the song where it made sense. That's a hard thing to accomplish. And yes, this all comes from somebody who can play MoP note for note all the way through. I have a bad habit of playing little bits and pieces from it when we're having a little break period during band practice.

I think that for the most part, Death Magnetic is a competent album. It's most certainly better than most rock albums that have been released in a while. However, I think the album really failed to deliver that memorable song that, as a music lover and a lead guitarist myself, can memorize, play it in my head, and hear it at all times. Kill em All had Seek and Destroy. Ride the Lightning had Fade to Black. Master of Puppets had...Master of Puppets. And Justice for All had One. The Black Album had Enter Sandman. Even Reload had a pretty recognizable song with Fuel. The pattern is all their old albums had that one song. Most of their albums had several memorable songs, but most people would instantly associate those songs I listed with those albums, if you could only pick one song out of the album. What will people associate with Death Magnetic? I can't really pinpoint a memorable song with Load. I can't really do it with St. Anger, except for hearing the horrible snare pattern in the title song. I'm afraid Death Magnetic will fall to that same curse. There are some good licks throughout the whole album, but they're all on different songs. The clean verse lick from The Day That Never Comes is pretty awesome, and reminiscent of Fade to Black (in fact, it uses the same chords arpeggiated just in a different pattern). Unfortunately, there's not really that one song on the album that everybody listens to and just goes..."Whoa."
