i have a bench question

i was benching in the gym yesterday and some guys said your benching wrong im like what do you mean, he said never go all the way down to your chest im like what have been for years. he told me to go an 1inch from my chest is this the right way or what. thanks ed
 
I made a similar thread not too long ago... most of the very advanced lifters here DO go to their chest :)
 
yeah people have told me that too, about how it messes up your rotator cuff.

i too have a bad rotator cuff (from judo though), but it's never been hurt or strained or anything from benching. i come down far when i'm doing 1RM, i just touch my chest though, not that bouncing stuff, but come down to about 1-2cm off my chest normally.

i say, do whatever that doesn't make it hurt, just keep the consistent everytime and strict/steady.
 
i think thats maybe why my shoulder hurts sometimes but i will tell you one thing when you come a inch from your chest its alot harder more resistances. i do ju jistu and that helps my shoulder alot

well, if the only thing out of risking NEVER being able to lift again is being able to lift a lot more for the time being, then i choose not to lift more.

i actually hurt my shoulder when i first began doing breakfalls lol
 
All depends on how flexible you are. I can easily go to my chest without any discomfort. If it hurts or is uncomfortable...you're going too low.

I had a 150lb PT tell me the same thing a while back.. i was tempted to tell him I'd end up looking like him if I did half reps.

IMO use the maximum range of motion on every lift that you can safely do.
 
Keep your elbows tucked in instead of flared out to your sides and your shoulder joint will be protected from injury when going all the way down.

do you tuck your arms in your lats because i think that how one of my friend bench and he told me to try it. thanks for the info
 
i think if you cant get a comfortable full ROM then you need to work on your shoulder flexibility....i couldnt imagine not touching my chest, seems unnatural to me
 
Stopping when your upper arms are parallel to the ground is good advice if you don't know how to bench. Most gym members think that all there is to benching is lowering the bar to the chest then pushing it up. They put way too much stress on the shoulder joint which will eventually lead to problems.

There are many key points to consider when benching. Bringing the elbows into the sides is one of them.
 
as long as u dont bounce it off ur chest ur fine, althou if u wanna get stronger try stopping the bar about inch or less from ur chest, eventually ull be benching more and more weight......if u bring ur elbows in , depending on ur grip , be careful not to stress the tricept too much ...after all u wanna work ur chest
