So how do you know how much you're consuming exactly after you cook the rice or pasta? etc....
Are the values way off after the food is cooked?

Thats why you measure dry (rice/pasta/oats) or raw (meats/poultry). There's no way to know after something has been cooked...who knows how much water the rice absorbed when cooked, or how much water the chicken lost during cooking.

I got into it wityh a buddy and I wanted to verify this:

When counting Protein Grams:

Let's say on the package label, it says 4ounces = 20 grams of protein (or whatever).

Is this BEFORE it's cooked or after. There IS a big difference (esp with red meat and chicked cause the water weight and fat weight that gets cooked OFF).

I ASSUME it's before!?!!?!? Right????

Thanks

Yes its before cooked.

But yoi are still OK.

Lets say that 4 oz of meat has 45 grams of protein.

Now you cook it and it weighs less, fine. But the only reason it weighs less is because its lost some water, and depending upon how you cooked it, some fat. But as far as I know, you don't lose any of the protein.

Now you may have lost some of the fat (i.e. Da George Fo-man Greeeel) but the protein numbers shoudl be the same.

I think. LOL

For anyone interested......I took 40 ounces of uncooked chicken breast (skinless/boneless) and grilled it. I ended up with only 32 ounces post-grilling.....attributing that to solely water loss.

That's a 20% difference in pre-cooked vs cooked weight. Somewhat significant when dieting.

when dieting.........EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS!!!! i want my extra 8 ounces of chicken man! lol. but seriously, you have to be careful when on a cutter that you check the labels carefully on this whole cooked/uncooked subject. :D

it's always uncooked unless specified otherwise.....usaully 8 ozs. chicken = 50 grams of prot and should yield about 6 ozs....
