I don't know how to cook.

Ok, I moved out a month ago. I am 20 years old, and i try to eat and train hard. It was easy when mommy was around but its been a month and always eating outside is not an option anymore because its too expensive. To make it worse i have lost 4-5 pounds this month from not eating well enough. Can someone guide me into basics of cooking. As a body builder what should i need to eat a lot of and the essentials that i can do at home? If u have any good site in your mind please don't hesitate mentioning it. I have also been advised for about 3000+ calories per day. Please advise on how to reach 3000+ on things i can stack up and cook at home.

I make my meals Sunday night. I eat the same meals everyday.
eggs, turkey burger, shakes, oatmeal and wheat germ, tuna, chicken, celery, peanuts, skim milk, brown rice. That's it. Not to complicated. You'll learn as you go. It was cooking for myself even when I lived home so it wasn't too hard for me.
Get some cheap,bargin-bin spices at the store and see what tastes you like.

tnx Ulcasterdropout, how do u cook oatmeal? lol, and peanuts!! And how much do u make on sunday nights man.. must be hell of a lot of cooking. Now brown rice is nice i guess, it will last long, and i have eggs, turkey etc. Can u tell me how to cook a chicken. lol.

easy methods, microwaving, steaming, grilling, baking, frying, boiling.

do you have pots and pans?

can you buy a george foreman grill, those are indispensible.

lol did mommy teach you anything? how is you laundry?

I don't cook the oatmeal, peanuts, tuna, and shakes.
I do bust out a spread on Sunday night. A bag of brown rice can last me about 2 weeks at 3/4 cup per day.
I grill the chicken. I grill all my meat.
You could bake your chicken if you have an oven. I never tried to microwave raw chicken.

I got trough all the shopping so i got the pots and pans, spoons and forks etc. I got a grill and an oven. But don't know how long should i bake the chicken for. And should i add anything to it before i bake it. And how do i eat a boiled chicken?? Be a little specific guyz i am a newbie. Oh btw, i learned not to add colours and black white in one wash the hard way. But i know how to do my laundry now.

For meat, if the inside is dry and no blood, it's done. Cut it open and look. White for fish, turkey, chicken and pork. Loss of pink for beef. You can get safe temps online.
Boiled chicken, ill, not for me. Maybe for soup.
Baking? Get a baking pan/sheet.
For flavor, that's your call. I add little because almost all spices are chuck full of sodium. Thats bad for me.

The george foreman grill will become your friend. Mine came bundled with a basic recipe book. Do an online search for some healthy recipes and follow the directions, you'll get the hang in no time. Many foods have cooking directions on the package.

Look around the 'net or buy a beginner's cook book......A lot of cooking is by trial & error as well as feel.....

I personally don't care for boiled chicken -- however I do occasionally poach chicken for soup..... You want your chicken firm and when pierced with a knife, you don't want bloody-liquid to come out -- or cut it open to check it...

TIP: When cooking a steak, LET IT SIT for a few minutes before cutting it open as you will lose all the juices if you cut it open right away.....

A George Foreman grill as well as a crock pot are good tools to have....

i swear by steaming. a 2o0g piece of chicken can be steamed in 10 mins, and same for vegeatbles. food remains so much more tender, and having tough chicken is eating gum, dry as shit.

you just need a pan of boiling water, a bowl and stand, put chicken/veg in and cover.

all rice takes 20mins, brown maybe a bit longer.

how is it going?

i have forgotten what its like to NOT know any basics.

Get a BBQ dood. Plain and simple. Get a BBQ, and cook meat on it. Fish, Chicken, Beef, and Pork. It dont get any easier.

yeah obiwan is a chef :)

it can get easier than a BBQ actually, just do it real rough style. i say just strike up a fire outside and get those chicks roasting baby :D you can tell when they are done when they burn a bit lol.

appreciate all the advise, thank you. Had a little wild weekend, way too much booze. And the part where this dude thought the hammer in my pants was a shot-gun. ;) , anyways, its back to work from tomorrow on.

lol
had weekends like that..........when i was younger
hmm hammer?
sure that was what he was after :rainbow:
lol teasing bro

the basics:
get a good grill (tabletop, stovetop or bbq)
get at least one non stick pan
suggest also a crockpot/slowcooker
suggest also a wok

easiest way for bros to get a quick tasty meal is to grill it
marinate the food in some of your fave flavours...ie herbs, salad dressing, bbq sauce (lo carb for me), keep in refrig til needed and grill it
you can also broil it in the oven

non stick pans you still need a tiny bit of oil but oils can be fun and can add flavour as well as mono/polysaturated fats
just do not overheat the pan or the oil

woks are good for steaming and stirfrying

slowcooker i use for chili and stews....the bonus is you throw all the stuff and go work out or golf or go to work and you come back several hours later and it's good to go

feel free to ask any questions
i will respond in a few hours now that i have some free time

believe it or not all the recipes work plus it gives lots of helpful tips

laurel's kitchen is good if you are more nutritionally minded
fanny farmer for more homestyle dishes

also throw in a basic cookbook from from of your favourite ethnic foods

my library is stacked with thai and sushi cookbooks lol

Listen to Obiwan young grasshopper and you will learn! LOL

Hey, check out thrift stores & garage sales -- you may be able to find a crockpot real cheap or just get a basic one for $10 or so at Walmart/Kmart....

With a crockpot you can buy a lower cut of meat, put it in the crock & that will tenderize it....you can make chili, stew -- beef or turkey, pulled pork, etc

The net is a great resource for recipes.....Buy lots of cheap spices & spice mixtures if you can't afford fresh.....

Plus, practice!! I've had to toss stuff before cuz it didn't turn out but you'll learn.....

Post here often & ask questions! We're here to help!

a fully stocked larder of herbs and spices is a MUST too, right Obiwan? :D
not necessarily
just whatever you like most

but i tend to have a refrigerator like most chinese
full of condiments that i suse in cooking

I buy lots of spices from all kinds of stores...... cheap-type stores too....and lots of Mrs. Dash when on sale, dried chile peppers, etc

I think spices are important....condiments tend to get lost in my fridge....

i get most of my spices from the west indies mart
dirt cheap

Here, where I live, we don't have those type of ethnic markets..... Wish we did...... so I usually get the 59 cent mixed spice stuff from the grocery store....

Eh, not the best option, but it still tastes good...
