ORLANDO, Fla. -- A Central Florida woman claims a wheelchair-bound man conned her out of a $400,000 inheritance.
Satellite Beach resident Hope Thomas, 35, said she had $400,000 amassed from a 1975 inheritance after her parents died in a plane crash.
"I wanted to set (the money) aside and leave (it) for my son to go to nice schools, travel and have a successful educated upbringing," Thomas said.
Instead, she is working three jobs to hold on to her rented home and trying to ward off creditors from the house she trusted a man to help her build, Local 6's Tony Pipitone reported.
Local 6 reported that the man Thomas said she trusted with her money, Alexander Wright, has served time in prison for bank fraud, money laundering and mail fraud.
He's embezzled nearly $500,000 from the Pentagon before meeting Thomas, Pipitone said.
"It is frustrating that I trusted in somebody," Thomas said. "I wrote him check for $400,000 and he at the same time wrote me a check for $420,000."
In 10 days, Wright told Thomas to just deposit his check and keep the extra $20,000.
"Right before I was supposed to deposit it, he said, 'Hold off on that check, I have a better idea. Let's drag this out for six months,'" Thomas said.
Thomas eventually performed an online search and found a Pennsylvania newspaper article with the headline, "Paraplegic Charged With Swindling $400,000."
"That was right after the $400,000," Thomas said. "I said maybe he would to do this to me as an individual, but (there's) no way he is going to do it to Noah. There's no way he's going to take all our money. And I was wrong."
Wright was arrested last summer after being accused of scamming banks out of more than $1.5 million. But he was out on bond and living in Key West, Pipitone reported.
Wright is due in federal court next month to answer the charges.
"We're told one can often find Alex Wright parked in his wheel chair, eating and drinking at the Key West restaurant he's tried to get investors for," Pipitone said. "We tried to reach him on his cell phone but he didn't answer and his mailbox was full."
Thomas is still waiting to get her money back.
