i bought a boxer

bwah
finally did it
he's a cutie.. 7 1/2 weeks old. beefy daddy and momma, champs. i have no pictures but hope to get some

he is passed out right now
i've been reading everything i can about how to do this puppy raising right the first ttime

any suggestions? i'm going to crate train - he doesnt seem to like it at ALL right now. he is not housetrained, he was totally outdoors when we bought him. we are in an apt. so hopefully the crate will aid that. i am hoping to get a vet appt. monday to get him checked out fully.

how long before he stops crying for his mom? (he isnt crying at the moment but i know he will be tonight - he is a bit of a whiner)

Oh, for a second I thought you bought Mike Tyson. :D

Get an old wind up clock and put it inside an old pillow - the ticking helps to calm them.

Once he has your scent - make sure that if you have to leave him for more than an hour you leave an old article of clothing with your scent on it. This will cut out a lot of the chewing up of personal items when you leave.

If you are going to box / crate train make sure you offer a reward in the form of praise rather than a treat.

Don;t go complwetely crazy and baby talk him to death the second you get in the door or else he will expect this treatment all the time and if he doesn't get it - he'll take it out on youwhen you leave.

Dogs are funny that way ya know.

If you want I can post some of the websites about potty training.

potty training websites - sound great

i have a few that are good... but the more the better

the breeder wasnt the best in the world, but i am still happy with the purchase. as long as the vet says its healthy..
any idea when i should start "puppy kindergarten"? what i read says now is the crucial time to socialize so i am going to do what i can to find something in the area
unfortunately, people i know say they had little to no luck finding something like that for some reason :(
i'll figure something out.... it doesnt have any shots yet, so i'm not about to expose it to anything much until that is taken care of.

he already peed on the floor once :\ he did it so fast i couldnt catch him. he wouldnt pee outside.

it sucks that the breeder didnt do a bit better job socializing or keeping it in the house. i don't think it will be a big problem though, just something to work around.

WE HAVE CRATE TRAINED OUR BULLDOG, AND IT WILL BE ROUGH FOR THE FIRST WEEK OR SO, BUT ITS BEEN A COUPLE MONTHS NOW, AND HE DONT MIND HIS CRATE. WHEN I YELL AT HIM, HE RUNS IN THERE, ITS LIKE A DOG HOUSE TO HIM, BUT LET HIM OUT AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE.
PLUS, MINE IS 4 MONTHS OLD NOW, AND UNLESS I LET HIM OUTSIDE EVERY 30 MINUTES HE WILL PEE. HE DRIBBLES EVERYWHERE, JUST GET USED TO IT, AND BY A CHEAP STEAM CLEANER.
ALSO, IM SUPRISED YOURS HASNT HAD ANY SHOTS YET, WHEN I PICKED MINE UP AT 8 WEEKS, HE HAD BEEN DE WORMED 4 TIMES, AND HAD A COUPLE OF SHOTS ALLREADY. ALSO, THE CLOCK IS A GOOD IDEA, BUT WHAT WORKS BEST ARE THOSE MACHINES THAT PLAY A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT NOISES, LIKE A SEA SHORE, RAIN, THUNDER, OR MINES FAVORITE, WHAT SOUNDS LIKE A HEART BEAT. GOOD LUCK, AND BE PATIENT WITH HIM.

bull dogs are flat out stupid animals... cool as fuck, but stupid...

i have a boxer, a boxer mix, and a doberman...

the dobe and boxer play like mad... they also get in a tiff now and then but thats cuz the boxer is an absolute BITCH!!! and the dobe is only 1, so the boxer holds her own on her still, she is 3... but being dwarfed... so when they fight, the dobe gets on her, moves her head as far as possible from the boxers teeth and basically just tries not to get killed...

gi gi is the boxer, she is quite the funny little dog... attention crazed... fawn and black, white chest.... ears not done... saliva spillage like crazy if food is around... nasty.

this thing is a poop monster. poop. poop. poop. poop. no poop messes on the floor yet, only a few pee spots :\

trying to get dread lord out so we can get a crate and leash
we have a plastic shipping crate, but he hates it being closed in, so i am *really* hoping the wire mesh crate will help

he had to sleep on the bed w/us last night . couldnt crate him, couldnt put him in the other room, jusdt cant have him making too much noise yet. if i get a crate, he is going to have to sleep in that though....

Haha...house training dogs sucks!

Good luck with the crate, though...he will cry in that too.

I tried that with my puppy and he made so much noise I was afraid he would keep the whole complex up. So...he began sleeping in my bed. Guess where he's sleeping still today???

LOL

damnit thats what i am a fraid of
he neeeeeeeds to get crate trained thogh cuz we cant leave him alone in here
destruction = bad

my cat doesnt like him
hehehe/////........ he just growls and hisses.. he wont strike yet though, the puppy chases and barks at him already. he thinks its his momma... nope.... lol

Well...crate training the dog for when you are gone is alot easier than crate training him at night.

Haha..you don't have to hear him cry in the crate when you are gone, but he sure will keep you up while you are trying to sleep. Besides...you will come to love your dog so much that you won't mind him sleeping with you and Dread Lord! :)

do you advise we leave a note or something with our neighbors so they dont complain to the landlord?

did u ever get complaints?

im not just gong to stick him in a crate and expect him to be happy
it's best advised to do gradually like placing treats in there so it eventually likes going in there, but god knws how long that takes

a little puppy on the bed is no biggy right now, but he's going to be quite large ~70 lbs.. thats a big lap baby.... and thats all he is right now, a big whiny baby
lol

his breeders were pretty careless....

Well, it depends...are you paying a pet deposit or is he 'illegal' so to speak? I didn't pay a deposit for mine, so I had to be extra careful. He's almost 2, so he's okay now....but then...

So, if you aren't...yeah, I would warn the neighbors and tell them to come to you first before going to the landlord. That seems to work best because they think you are considerate for even thinking about them.

Crate training doesn't take nearly as long as you would think, but I had a smart dog. I have never really been around boxers, so I don't know where they are on the intelligence scale, you know?

At first, you will have to chase the dog around the house in order to get him in there, because after a few days he will realize where you are wanting to put him. They are all smart when it comes to that. I agree with the treat thing ( I noticed Shrebly said not to use those), but I have crate trained 4 dogs (1 pure-bred German Shephard, 2 dashchunds, and one beagle/terrier mix). This worked well for all of them.

So...after he starts running from you, put him in there and give him a treat. When dogs are that young, it takes more than verbal praise to work...treats are wonderful inventions! :)

i appreciate the advise

we paid a cat deposit.. but dont exactly have permission to have a dog
our maintenance man saw us wityh him last night, but hes a druggie, so i dont know if he realized we had a puppy

If he's only 7 and a half weeks old....it will be a while.

Just be patient...I'm sure that he will be a wonderful dog when you get through all the crap stuff...

My boyfriends roomy (before he moved in here) has gone through two boxers and I have to say they were the dumbest dogs I have ever seen. Quite hyper too. Make sure you get him trained. He didn't have either of his trained and was so sorry for it. Those dogs when not properly trained can make your life hell.

Star

star is wrong... boxers are very smart... not top 10 dog list, but top 20 or so...

house training can take a boxer some time though...

as for the crate, IGNORE THE CRIES!!! do not let it out when it cries or you will be in for one long year... try not to lap it too much or you will have a 70lb lap puppy climbing all over you (i have 3 of them now)..

thx for advise everyone

we got a 42" crate thats for up to 90lb dogs,
i havent put it together yet, its wire mesh, supposed to have a divider which i hear is a BIG MUST

we are trying to get him used to his puppy bed in the corner now before we stick it in the crate
he was worried when we got home..
we left a note with the only neighbor we see.. hopefully that wont be a problem and they will be nice about it insteadof just whining to the land lord

he doesnt seem to really want to play with toys much, only likes a few treats, not eating a lot which i dont want him too, the breeder bitch let him free feed, so i'm trying to put him on a schedule to control his bladder/poopies.

he has a leather buckle collar on, he doesnt even seem to notice it though. i thought that was strange. he isnt terribly timid, he charges around the apt. and stuff, but he just hasnt gotten involved with us too much

he seems to think my huge (bigger than me) stuffed penguin is his mommy now and likes to curl up near it, so thats where his bed is for now.

i agree with star, i have not seen a smart boxer yat. they are so hyper, and dont listen, but its all in how you bring them up.
my bulldog is the sweetest animal i have ever owned. he is smart, and loves my cat, although it did take a while beforethey became buds.
anyways, another idea we did with the bulldogs, was use baby gates, and keep him in the kitchen. we bought a saint bernard at the same time we bought the bulldog. also, get your boxer neutered asap, it will help a little.
