My son will be 14 soon after Christmas and I swore I would not get him a cell phone till he is driving. Thought it was absured to have a cell phone this young.

BUT...he is a very good kid and I have talked to him about maybe getting him one of those prepaids so that was he has to earn $ for his own minutes and all. Now, I do not want to spend a fortune but I also don't want to just run and get him on of those crappy ones at the dollar store.

ANY SUGGESTIONS? I know he would want one where he can change ring tones and he really like his friends phone where you can put a picture for each person's ring. I am so clueless where to even start. I use to have a cell phone from nextel but I let mine go because I figured if people can't reach me at work or home...I don't want to be reach!! I hated having it.

Any help would be appreciated!

My 11 year old has a phone and is VERY responisible with it (on a family plan) He's had if for a year now. I would not get a picture phone, too much temptation there. My son has avery basic Nokia... indestructible... don't do the flip, it will not stand up. It's been a lifesaver for us on many occasions. I think it's a good idea.

Sell him to the gypsies and get yourself a sweet cell phone.

win-win

hummm, you just might have a point there! ;)

Like I said, I have no use for a phone. I hated it!!!! If I am not by a phone then I don't want to be found! :supercool

Darling, I think you would be better off my adding a second line to your plan and sharing your minutes with him. Most carriers charge $9.99 for a second line. The Razr phone is considered cool and has dropped considerably in price. You can even try Ebay and get a used one. Just make sure it is compatible with your carrier.

Get him one of the phones from the 80's that you need to carry around like a lunch box.

But I am in the dark ages...I don't have one anymore. Besides I want him to earn his time on the phone.

OK here is my opinion. I have a trac fone that my father had bought for me. Nothing but issues with it. They are prepaid and suck.
If you want to go prepaid I would go with either boost or cingular wireless.
Virgin mobile has a prepaid but i have heard a lot of people are gettin screwed using them

For some reason I have the impression that a pre-paid minute is very expensive. Look closely. Now, I think it is a great idea to give a cell phone to a 14 year old. You would be able to know where he is at all times and you would look like a cool, modern mom. Just a little milf plus.

Thanks for that. Finally a serious answer! I appreciate the insight!! I will keep this in mind.

yes ma'am

yeah, I could see him packing that around all day. Can you believe at his school you can't even have backpacks! Only big binders. I guess so you can't conceal guns or whatever.
What has the world come to! :worried:

Tell him not to ever use directory assistance or you'll be paying up the whoosah (how do you spell that anyway.) or dial him into free411. not that i needed directory assistance when I was fourteen, but you never know these days. that's 1-800-free411, that's a 1-800-free411.
how do those guys on TV say it. that's a 1-800 and a free plus a 411.
Anyway, small thing but at a buck fifty the kid could do some damage to your wallet useless he knows better.

I agree with the above and would go with Boost. The dollar a day radio helps to cut down on minutes used. The I-275 is a cheap phone that is basically indestructable but works very well.

TRUE. BUT Flip it....../
Get him a phone. You will ALWAYS be able to find him. The first time he isn't home and does NOT answer the phone when you call(with a few exceptions) take it away.

Perhaps you should keep his future in mind. A boy without a cellphone these days would be like a boy without a huntin' rifle in those days. It's a techno world we live in. So you may as well get him started now.
Buy him a computer, printer, scanner, and external hard drive too. The way that kids innovate, your whole family will be sitting pretty in weeks.
