I am confused w/ IT schools..advice??

As many of you know I had that accident awhile back and I am notnreal sure if ill ever go back to my former profession of construction. Which I hated anyways but the $ was good.

So I was thinking whike im on disability I my as well learn to do something else. Exactly what I have no idea yet.

I live in the Kansas City area and from what i've heard we have one of the largest support groups for unemployed IT workers. LOL--no doubt from all the Sprint layoffs right after Sprint built a small city for headquarters here.

Yet everday on the radio I hear multiple ads for high paying IT jobs that you can get after only 6 months of training. First off--im like what could you really learn in 6 months?

So...are there really these jobs out there? Or do you think as long as these tech schools can convince people there are and have them plop out 10k or so you will continue to hear the ads regardless?

no the jobs arent out there, go to one of the support groups for shits one night before you even think of going into the field. Youll walk out depressed and thankin God you arent /them/ :)

Your not going to learn much in 6 months and a lot of IT positions have experience requirements. Most LAN administrator positions request atleast 5 years experience along with a hand full of certifications.

It's possible they will place you in a position after you completed their courses, but I bet you will not be earning what you expected.

There aren't entry level jobs paying $50-60K unless you've got a computer degree and several years experience. My FB makes $66K her first job out of college but she's VERY smart and worked on the college LAN for years. It's not as bad as it was before but I wouldn't get into IT for the money....do it because you're a geek like I am.

rsnoble, i suggested a business idea to you years ago, but you didn't listen.

you hunt morel mushrooms, right? you should start growing them and make a business out of that. morels are pretty expensive, and cultivating mushrooms is easy, from what i understand.

screw that shit......

get a business degree and get paid for sitting on your ass telling other people what to do

I pretty much assumed this--doesnt hurt to talk about it though.

good advice and so true.

Those ads are part of the reason there are so many IT people out of work. Everyone and their brother thought going to a 2 week MCSE bootcamp a few years ago would get them a 60k/yr job as a MS systems admin. So, it's flooded. I guess the bootcamps are still trying to crank out admins.

There's IT guys with 20 years experience working at circuit city and mcdonalds. I wouldn't have too much faith in getting a good IT job that quick. I've interviewed IT guys here in LA who had been unemployed for almost a year. And the IT market in LA is much better than most metro areas. I'd hate to fathom how bad it must be out east.
