My new computer was working flawlesly, I come home after work today and it was hosed! It doesn't think I have windows installed now, but the hard disk registers the used disk space. Anyone know how to fix this? I may just have to take it in to the shop and pay the big bucks to repair it.

You said your computer was new. So there must be atleast a year's warranty on it. You should find a number to call from your dealer or any brochures you got with the computer. Tell them the trouble. Now if you don't have any important data that you need in the comp then you can ask them for system restore CDs, which would reformat your hardrive nomatter what the problem is. Other then that, they can direct you to what you should do in order to fix the problem on the phone, or they can send in a tech or you can simply take it back to the store and get it fixed. It is otherwise impossible for anyone to guide you into solving a problem like that from this board. Good luck.

Also make sure that you don't spend another penny in this process. I had the same problem. I got a new keyboard cuz i spilled coffee on it, a new mouse, and system reformat CDs all for free under my warranty. I also took it back to the store three times to fix minor gligdes.

thanks, it has very important info on it. I had a backup but it was a few weeks old and I have like 10 hours worth of software to install again. I am gonna take it to one of those recovery places. Probably cost me a fortune.

It was one I built and the hard drive just up and quit. I supect a virus got past my zone alarm/norton/spysweeper set up. Probably through Yahoo Messenger.

You possibly just need to restore the master boot record, depending on what the actual message is.

it says there is a read error on the disk. I got it once to boot into safe mode, maybe I will try that again. It was weird, everything worked but the mouse, now it won't even boot up from that drive. My back up drive works, it sees the disk, but if you try to do anything with it bsod! I hate computers sometimes.

I think XP has some restore options on boot up; try to restore the boot environment.

keep tapping F8 when the computer is booting. It will take you to a list with lots of options. You will have the system administrators options, i supect you know this allready. Anyways, you have system restore and cleaning disk options from that menu in XP. If only you knew if u have a virus and its names. When you log in Safe Mode, it has a purpose. You can delete any suspected file that you think might be causing any harm. Safe mode does not allow any files that are important for the computer to function normally to be deleted. And restores them in normal mode. So you can delete your heart out and get rid of the infected files that are supicious. Keep trying. If nothing works, then you must download a win XP Cd, found even on Kazaa. You will download an image, which you can burn on a CD. You can borrow it from a freind if you have just one computer. Then u can reformat without loosing the files, in Xp as I remember. Just trying to save you money. GL.

I wonder if my mother board is bad. Now my second drive is giving the same error

If you put the comp together then maybe you shoud open it and check everything and put it back together. I fixed my sound card like this.

Trying that as we speak. I am not happy as I am looking at like 10 inches high of programs that need to be reinstalled. and some of them are a bitch to install

I am very informed of computers, and before you spend any money, following this advice and do a system restore. It should bring back any files that was saved from before the crash happened. You are going to want to pick a date to restore from when you know for a fact your system was not infected. Then it should go back to the normal state, and you may only have to purchase a new mouse. By the way, is your mouse wireless?

yes it is wireless, I was finally able to get norton running from the disk and I am currently performing a disk check. There seems to be a lot of unreadable file redord segments, files are in the 300's and 500's it could take all night for this check. So, I hope that I can recover the disk enough to get back to the point where I can at least read it. and possibly do a system restore from that point.

thanks

nope, that couldn't repair the files, says there is no room on the disk to do that. it is 160gb disk that only used about 15 gigs of space. I am screwed.
