Hundreds Get Radiation Pills

CLINTON, Ill. - A year ago, Charles and Deborah Bateson may have disregarded a chance to stock up on pills that help block radiation in case of an accident at the nuclear plant near their home.

They were among the first to get the pills Saturday.

"The way the world is right now, you never know what's going to happen," Charles Bateson said.

Hundreds of residents within 10 miles of the Clinton nuclear power plant took advantage of a weekend giveaway of potassium iodide pills. The pills can block buildup of one type of radiation in the thyroid gland, but do not guard against other radiation.

Clinton-area residents are the first in Illinois to be offered the pills by the state Department of Nuclear Safety. The agency later plans to offer potassium iodide to residents near Illinois' five other working nuclear plants.

DNS spokeswoman Patti Thompson said the giveaway allows the department to address safety and emergency concerns.

Since Sept. 11, federal nuclear regulators have made potassium iodide available to the 33 states with nuclear plants; three other states have distributed pills to those who live in the shadow of nuclear plants. In those states, officials say, between 10 and 34 percent of those eligible chose to stockpile the medication.

Ya know it sucks that this time we dont have an actual enemy to go after. Its just a bunch of muslim terrorist cells spread out everywhere. The only solution to keep us safe if we have another attack is to lock all the islams up in camps like we did during WW2. There's no other way to be safe if you dont know who to look out for.

They just busted a black muslim American up in Seattle who was supposedly running a training camp. They dont look like "rag-heads", just normal black folks- but guess what, they are terrorists. Hell most of the dudes on those flights did not look like the typical "terrorist".

True, but there are ways to identify them all. We can keep pretty good tabs on our people, if we needed to round up All Muslims Im sure they could do it easier than you think.

I read a long story in National Geographic about the nuclear age, The Cold War, and how many millions of tons of nuclear waste there is from it. Much of it came from the production of the 30,000 nuclear warheads in the US arsenal and nuclear submarines, etc. The US gov is trying to find ways to store it without it leaking and contaminating soil and ground water with plutonium and other "iums". I have come to the conclusion after reading this article that there really is no way to clean up nuclear waste, and it is going to affect us one way or the other. I think it is too dangerous to use and we should use wind, water, and/or solar power instead.

The Irish govt distributed a pack of these to each citizen recently. My mom forwarded the package on to me, so now they sit in the BRIGHT ORANGE box on my stereo, they make a nice talking point.

Apparently the reactor at Torness is going to be closed down.
