This may be totally stupid but:

I'm talking about a post-training scenario only. Everyone says to chug done some protein, carbs, creatine, etc. ASAP after training.

Would it make more sense to spike those insulin levels by downing a sugar based food/drink (no protein, very little/no fat)first, and then having the protein complex carbs a little later to take advantage of the higher insulin levels. Sort of like mimicing how insulin injections work?

You know - the old eat dessert beofre the meal type of thing?

Comments on how stupid this is may commence...

...now.

I alwys bought into the thoery of glycogen replacement first. I'll chug gatorade or frozen yogurt (with my stomach i like the yogurt for the fructooligisacharides, i know i botched that spelling so let's just say good bacteria) which is where most o my carbs come from now. After that I wait a while to consume my protein. I'd like to know this too because that is basically how I have been doing it.

You got it Corn.Since one of insulin's primary actions is shuttling more amino acids through the cell membrane,it is always wise to precede protein/amino intake with a high glycemic nutrient of some sort to spike it's release.I actually recommend taking a shaker bottle to the gym with a high carb breakdown or one of the creatine formulations with a high dextrose combination.

Cool. Makes sense.

btw - what dosage of ala should be added to this mix 300-400 mg?

I'm using Post Training Formula from proteinfactory.com
It contains:
50% Maltodextrin
25% CFM Whey Isolate
25% hydrolyzed whey 520

and taste pretty good :)

Makes sense, but have any of you guys read the article
by the guy from Meso?(VERY, very long time ago)

He showed a fascinating study of how to use carbs
to reduce catabolism during training, and therefore
achieve BETTER gains in the long run. I believe
it was 12% more.

It went like this:

During a workout, muscle catabolism takes place no matter
what you do, UNLESS you raise insulin levels.

His point was to bring a 45-60g high GI carb drink and
sip at it throughout the workout in order to keep
insuin levels high. By doing this, he kept his
cortisol levels in check and therefore less
of his muscle was broken down for energy.

After the workout, insulin levels would be lowered again,
and he'd take what Corn was suggesting to bring
them up again and drive some amino-acids into
the muscle cells in order for muscle repair to take place.

Remember that all of the protein synthesis from a workout
is realized from Hour 1(after the workout) till Hour 30.
so, waiting 30-45min before taking in some food after
a workout is fine.

I tried this and amazingly it does seem to work.
If you're plateauing, this should break the plateau for you.

Fonz

That's exactly what I have done for years Fonz, and I agree,it seems to keep glycogen stores fuller and reduce flatness and fatigue.I belive this applies to creatine as well.

I think that mid workout drink part of your carbs then post workout finish up your carb drink then hit the protien.

do you guys have a carb/protein drink pre workout? I've been reading that a pre workout shake/drink is better than a post workout drink alone.
