how to you know when to trust a member

I recently recieved an instant message from an elite fitness member and the guy seemed real cool. No offense to you if you read this but i'm just trying to cover my ass. Are there often undercover people (if you know what i mean) acting as members and offering you a price list the first time you talk to them. I just got in trouble about 2 and a half years ago and i don't need anymore trouble then i already have. Any experienced members want to give me some advice i would appreciate it. Thanks
