how can I? sofa is next to the window and he gets on it to peep out the window.... does like tin foil work to keep him off the couch? any tricks? just spank him when he does it?

You have to train him to not get on the couch. Scold him and push him off the couch everytime you catch him doing it.

yeah if your roomies won't help you are screwed.

Besides many dogs respond better to a verbal scolding than physical abuse. Many dogs just think you are playing when you smack them around.

Do not hit him, it's a dreadful form of punishment for an animal. You'll screw his head up, he'll get hand shy or you'll turn him timid.

Dogs are like kids, you can't give them inconsistent rules. If your roomate isn't willing to abide by your rules you're going to have a problem.

If your roomate will help then invest in a book on dog training (even better, invest in some puppy obedience classes, you'll make yourself and the dog MUCH happier). But in the short term, get a couple of old soda cans, drop some heavy washers or a fistful of pennies in them, and seal the top. The FIRST time the puppy jumps on the sofa say, "NO," loud, firmly -- don't scream it -- and shake the hell out of the soda can. If he jumps right off, great, pet and praise him. If not, go and PLACE him on the floor, then pet and praise him. BE CONSISTENT.

Puppies respond well to positive reinforcement. However, negative reinforcement, screaming, slapping, hitting, does nothing but confuse them. Think of them like furry 1 year olds.

Listen to musclemom she has good advice, I used the same method training my dog, a can full of rocks, it worked very well

We used the one sheet of loosely rolled newspaper on our dog. Doesn't hurt them but makes a really loud popping noise that they don't like to hear.

Just give him a firm no as you pull him off the couch; He'll get it, I'm very permissive with my dog and he's allowed to lay wherever he chooses. However, everytime my ex girlfriend, whom I lived with for six months, stopped by my apartment after our breakup he would leap off the couch or bed the minute he heard her voice because he knew she didn't permit it. There is no reason to beat a pet for training; That's a sign of a bad owner or "parent."

When I would leave the house I would put mousetraps on the couch then put newspaper over them. It worked.
