how often do you go for PRs?

currently I try to hit new PRs every 3 months, but I know some peeps at my gym do it every 2 wks.

for comparision sake, how often does everyone go for PRs?

Depends, are we talking PRs for reps or weight? I train to failure on a lot of exercises, so I'm constantly hitting PRs in terms of reps - always trying to get that extra rep in. For 1RM PRs, every 2 weeks sounds about right.

On Mon and Wed. We alternate our Max Effort exercise every week so we CAN try for a PR.

Mon are squat days. Example of exercises are goodmornings, low or high box squat, pulls from 3 inch platform, rack pulls, reverse band pulls, box front squats.....You get the idea. We rotate the exercises every week and that allows for a pr try. Your body will not allow you to try for a pr on the same exercise for more than 3 weeks in a row. your cns will inhibit it......hence the rotation of exersises.

Same here..cur mentioned the ME exercises for squats/deads
for bench its board presses, floor presses, close grip press, reverse grip all can be done with straight weight or with bands, chains, or both

For me maybe once every 4 months. I can tell from my higher rep sets if I have gotten stronger. Unless my strength has gone WAY up and I just want to know. I've had to raise my weights on lat work recently by about 50 lbs.

I don't "try" to hit PRs

They just come.....

I can feel like shit for 1 month and have poor perf and then hit a couple of PRs all in a sudden

PRs are not linear

i dont max out often at all, but i do up the weight on my reps and break pr's quite often, especially bc im doing 5x5 now.

It depends on what music is playing. If Britney is squawking away in the background then no way am I going for a PR but a quick blast of rock and I might have a go. "Eye of the Tiger" still always gets me fired up even if I'm doing cardio.

I think the context you are looking for is PRs in the core lifts rather than special exercises or assistance work?

......i don't ever go for pr's. i never saw a benefit to them for myself other than wanting to pass out and bragging. my progress was always better sticking to my routine

You gotta get in the zone bro and forget about your surroundings. I sometimes curse at the weight in my head, just to get riled up - "You fucking bitch! You think you're heavy shit - oh man, I'm gonna fuck you up so bad - you ready?!" = PR.

my routine is made for me to try PR's 2 times a week..if you dont test yourself you dont know where you stand

It all depends what you are going for. Not everyone's goal is to break world records, or to lift 3x their bodyweight. Some people just do it for fun, some to stay in shape, so its understandable that some people dont feel a need to know their max that they can do.

I personally max out about every 2 weeks also (or try to). It all depends if im feeling it or not. If i am, i go for it, otherwise, i just stick to my routine.

whats the point of lifting if your not improving..it doesnt matter what your goals are..if you bench/squat or whatever the same weights week in and week out your physique will not change..so why bother?

agree. But every week? eventually you will reach your genetic potential or we would all be squating 1000+!!

it doesnt have to be 20 lbs per week..it could be a rep PR or
even a PR thats 3 lbs heavier than last week..but yes its ok if its every 2 weeks..
i just see the same people lifting the same weight EVERY week..and then wondering why they arent seeing results!!

You have given out too much Karma in the last 24 hours, try again later.

What we are trying to pr on is special exercises......Floor press, low box squat, deadlifts of a 3 inch platform......we usually don't try and pr on a basic squat, dead or bench.

We rotate our exercises every week or 2 weeks.....If I do a rotation of floor press, 3 board, rack lockouts and 2 board with bands, I will only be have to try to hit a pr on a particular exercise once a month........even though I am trying to break a pr every week, it's not on the same exercises. 5lbs on a special exercise means I am going to be stronger on my squat, dead or bench come the time of the competition.

Id suggest an Mp3 player or some similiar music playing device. It really helps me keep driving and KILLING THAT SHIT. I hate the music played in commercial gyms. Well worth the investment. One of the best Ive ever made!
The Mp3 player I just picked up is by Rave and only holds about 40 songs without a memory upgrade, but you can swap them quickly and cycle them from your hard drive. Its tiny and doesnt skip. Also it came with an armband which actually fit my arm. It leaves an imprint on my arm but it works! Its really out of the way for most exercises too. I can do all my rows for back without having the player in the way. Sometimes I have to loop the wire around my neck though. No problem. Much better then listening to the shit in the gym.

As for PR's. I go for them most every set I do. Most of my sets are too failure or very close. Especially on the compound lifts like incline presses and flat bench presses. Every set aside from warm-ups, will be a PR attempt. Either one rep max PR or rep PR. On biceps and triceps it can be difficult sometimes because they are slower to strengthen then compound lifts. Also, even though Ive recorded my routines, its hard to remember what my best dumbbell curl was for say 65lbs for reps. I still go all out. I cycle my focus on the flat bench and even incline bench. I have rep cycles and one rep max cycles. On the rep cycles my focus is rep PR's first, and once Ive exhausted all or most of my rep PR attempts I throw in some one rep attempts. This is a more freestyle type routine where I go by feel, and what I feel I can hit rep PR's on. Then Ill often pyramid back down for even more reps. The second cycle is the one rep max PR cycle. During this cycle my warm-ups are minimal and I go straight to one rep maxing. After Ive exhausted my one rep max attempts I go back down for reps, sometimes even hitting PR's with the reps. Main focus is still one rep max. Regardless of the cycle all my sets are to failure. Also I always hit both reps and one rep maxing each flat bench session. I like to get both in. There are exceptions and changes sometimes. Each cycle can last a few weeks or even months. Overall Im always trying to hit PR's on nearly everything. Aslong as injury or pain isnt preventing me.

it depends on what you mean- my current bench routine calls for me to get 2 sets of 6 with a certain weight and then add weight the next week and stay with that weight till i get all my reps and then move up again. so i'm trying for a PR every week, but as far as a 1RM, i try every 6 weeks or so. sometimes longer.

I agree. I progress by 1/2 reps!! KEEP KILLING THAT SHIT!!

squat, deadlift & bench press.

Squat...every few months.
Deadlift...every few months.
Bench Press...every couple years...lol.

The lifts that I try to hit PR's on are overhead lifts and good mornings mostly. I'll go for a PR on deads or squats when I feel the urge hitting me hard. I also focus on different things at different times. It is impossible to focus on all the aspects of training and be setting PR's in them all the time every week.

I like to hit a PR on bench every 6-8 weeks, deads every 2-3 months and squats every 3-4 months it seems.

Generally I just like to get new rep pr's or go up 5lbs in weight on my sets.

I go for a pr whenever it is available. If that is two weeks back to back I can better myself than I do it. I don't try to plan these things out as that can lead to lots of dissappointment. If you get in the gym and get going and things are going well then why not go for it even if you just maxxed out last week. I set a rack pull pr the week after my strongman comp even though I was completely wrecked at the time, it's just that things were going well so I went for it.

Cheers,
