For training.....ZERO....for a date/"muscle worship"/rasslin', $500.....lol, J/K!!!
Seriously,
I always thought a high level bodybuilder (female or male) can bring a wealth of knowledge to the table in the areas of contest prep and posing........as for training/training knowledge though, it is a different story a lot of times........from a few friends I know who sought out advice from 'top' BB's to train for a show, the routines were nothing more than the standard cut/paste job from FLEX and Musclemag, the 'bulking' diet was your standard oatmeal/peanut butter/baked potato fair, and VERY quickly, the topic of drugs came up......men got the standard test/deca/some type of harsh oral advice, women got primo/deca/anavar/winnie type cycles.......the training was nothing more than running through a list of exercises (sub-par exercises in my opinion) per bodypart with no plan for progress, but words like "feel the squeeze", "pump", "lactic acid", "tempo", "pre-exhaust" etc etc were thrown in to make things sound serious. And, maybe they will do something like have you do shrugs while laying face-forward on an incline bench to make it seem like you're on the 'cutting edge'.................I have known 3-4 people who sought out high-level and pro BB's for training, and every one of them came away with the same thoughts, which were basically, "I could have done that myself".
Am I saying ALL pro bodybuilders are unfit to train somebody? NO!! Absolutely not. But, I am saying that the title "pro bodybuilder" is by no means automatic qualification to train someone and by no means does it mean a persons necessarily knows their ass from a hole in the ground with respect to training. Again, giving someone a list of exercises or showing someone how to perform a skullcrusher or a cable flye does not constitute as worthwhile 'advice' in my opinion.
As far as the best trainers, do not look for someone's accomplishments necessarily, and please know that their personal numbers and their physique do not necessarily mean they know the first thing about anything.....look for the accomplishments of their trainees. Bill Starr's methods work on everyone who tries them, so do Charles Poliquin's, so do Loiue Simmons' and Dave Tate's, so do DC's, tried and true 'cookie cutters' are also a start. Gayle Hatch is a successful coach. Glen Pendlay/Mark Ripptoe never had a dissatisfied athlete I'm sure. The whole point of seeking advice though is to one day be able to train yourself, thatst he goal. If somebody can't tell you WHY you're doing something, then they are just spitting back something they heard or read and their advice is worthless.
You will see that most so called "bodybuilding gurus" know nothing more about training than the latest issue of FLEX, and nothing more about diet other than peanut butter/oats/potatos bulk you and do 45 min of cardio twice a day and eat chicken and tuna to cut......but their value comes in the fact that they are actually "drug gurus" with the ability to talk Biochemistry with any Harvard professor.
