How much weight for Good Mornings ?

Rocket

New member
Reading the Good Morning post made me think about this.
I warm up with 70lbs than finish with 100lbs but I don't think this is enough. How much does everyone else use?

How many reps are you doing . The important thing with these is FORM. You cannot slack or you will probably injure yourself. keep a tight arch and do sets of 10 with a weight that you can handle. You be the judge. I just did a 300 max today. 225 for reps though
Don't worry about everyone else just lift in your zone and youll be alright. Later

I brought this up in a thread before, but I'm still kinda curious. Do you guys prefer good mornings over stiff-legged deadlifts or do you do both?

I prefer good mornings over stiff legged deads, I find they really bring up my squat and reg dead weights.
My best is 365lbs for 5 sets of 3 reps, back parallel to the floor. My old training partner used to do triples on 6 plates per side.

I prefer good mornings over stiff leg deadlifts. One of my old training partners began experimenting with bottom position gm's and these fry my low back.

365?

365 on good mornings? hes nutso for doing that in my humble opinion. good mornings are not a heavy exercise. risking the hell out of exploding your back going heavy on those. I doubt 365 had any form at all....

Actually he has squated over 800lbs in competition.
FYI my form on the goodmornings is right on, my back is parallel to the floor on every rep, I just have a very strong lower back, ie, deadlift 455lbs for sets of 5

...

Well I can deadlift 455 for sets of 5 easy but can't think about 365 on good mornings.

Congrats.

My back ain't bad though.

I've seen your pic before, your back is pretty awesome.
I just have an abnormally strong lower back, ie, 8 weeks from the first time I deadlifted I pulled a 500lb single. At one point my good morning were stronger than my squat.
I posted a pic of myself in this board in a thread called "backing up my mouth", if you do a search you should be able to find it.

I just started doing good mournings and i start with about 100 and finish off with about 120 all three for 10 reps. These defintaley are a good lower back exercise.

I've benn doing 3 sets of 15 with 100lbs, I think i'll move the weight up and see what happens.

who cares what weight anyone uses.......just use what you can..... if its too light bump it up.

and yes its a good heavy exercise as well

I was doing 10 reps for 165 ummmmm maybe i should bump it up

I just can't see doing 300 plus for good mornings tho that's something i'd like to see

I deadlifted 495 i have a very abnormally strong back and i could never picture 300 plus good mornings as possible, nor have i witness goodmornings in my gym heavier than i do i mostly see nothing lower than 115.

I do them standing up if that's anything, do you do them sitting down or something

The guy I used to train with that does over 6 plates for gm's showed me a way to do them, with a certain arch in your back, that takes the stress off the spine and puts it on the surrounding muscles, makes it easier to go heavy.
I haven't done them for 5 months, but did them this week, after deadlifting 4 1/2 plates for sets of 5, and still managed sets of 5 on the gm's on 305lbs. Dissto, whose also a member of this board, was spotting me.
