how much protein to maintain muscle?

hi, once you have the desired amount of muscle and fat, how much protein do you need a day just to maintain the muscle? i ask because i've heard when you want to add muscle, you should eat at least 1g of protein per body lb. a day. since i just want to maintain my muscle (not get bigger), it should be ok to eat less protein, correct? i don't eat meat, so most of my protein comes from protein powders which cost $. in other words, what's the least amount of protein i need per day just to maintain my muscles. i have gained about 40lb of muscle and i weigh about 175lb...body fat is around 10%.

thank you

bodybuilders need at least 300g a day of protein. If you are not a bb'er, you could get by with a bit less-however, getting it from powder is a BAD idea-real food=always better than powder.Try fish since you don't eat meat

Eat Tuna fish, I don't believe in powders, especially to use them exclusively, its just a supplement, not a substitute for food.

Why do you say all BB need 300 grams when you are only taking in 300grams on HGH and test?

A good rule of thumb is 1g per pound of body weight for the natural trainer. In the presence of adequate protein and EFA's it is nearly all total caloric intake that will adjust your body mass.

t-800, the main question is not just how much protein but how many calories your getting. You could eat 300 grams of protein a day and not get bigger if your cals are still low and vice versa (ie eat 100 grams protein and still grow)...if your dieting its usually a good idea to up your protein intake but if your maintaining id still stick to at least .8g/lbs and preferrably more. Also if your not eating meat, you definetly want to get a lot of that from lowfat dairy products

I've read that 1.35 grams of protein per pound of lean body wieght is the way to go?.?...

So i take in only 200 grams of protien, 200 grams of carbs, and 40 grams of fat a day, when trying to maintain. I just started this diet a week ago and so far so good. However i'll keep you posted.

2.0 grams per kilogram of body weight is sufficient for bodybuilders.

Protein beyond what the body needs to build muscle does not build more muscle.
