How much ibuprofen is...

b fold the truth

How much ibuprofen is too much? Just curious. Have been on high dose for a week now.

Is it dangerous to take ibuprofen with alleve and nyquil?

Just wondering if I can keep this up for another 3 weeks or more and do no harm...

WHEN YOU START FOAMING AT THE MOUTH AND GETTING NAUSIA TO THE POINT OF WANTING TO DIE, THATS WHEN YOU NEED TO DISCONTINUE USE. YOU MAY POSSIBLY HAVE TAKEN A TAD BIT TOO MUCH.

You can't keep this up for 3 straight weeks. You need to lay off it for a few days.

I pop about 6 a day if I am having some major recovery pains. I won't go over 3 days though. Kidneys start to hurt.

You don't need to be taking that much. Prolonged use from that and Advil can severely mess up the stomach. It eats the protective lining out of your stomach. I'm with Wodin...you need to lay off for a bit...especially if you keep taking it and taking it and taking it...and it's not helping!

i have heard on elite (based on posters who said they got the info from doctors) that 800-1000 mg of ibuprofin at one time is the safety limit. If that means you can take 1000 mg every 4-6 hours, i am not sure. Ask babydoc, doctodd, or someone like that.

Been taking a gram every 4 hours for a week now...along with some alleve at least once a day...

bro,
i read up on ibuprofen, 3.2 grams per day is the max dose i found. that was for osteo/rheumatoid arthritis patients. the moderate pain said 1.2 grams per day. the alleve(naproxen) is also liver toxic. i would be very careful. i don't think u r in great danger, but would be nice if u could consult with a physician bout how much is too much because i am just reading med books and such, not much real life experience with it. did know a guy that took 20 tylenol and almost killed him. but that is diff drug.
talk to u soon,
brian
ps go see the lips

I have been taking 3-5 grams of ibuprofen a day for a week or more now along with 2-6 alleve. NyQuil has helped me sleep too.

My back hurts a bit at the moment...lower back. Night Fly said that it looked swollen also. It really hurts the most every time I take a step with my right leg...yeah...movement of the right side of my body hurts it.

if your using that much then you must be in pain therefore go see a doctor and he'll prescribe some pain killers which work alot better than any advil or aleve.

I just keep telling myself that if I can just endure it for another 3 weeks I could be a Pro and win my contest...

bro, i think another stronger pain killer would be in order if u r requiring that much ibuprofen.

I am taking that much ibuprofen and alleve and NyQuil and still having problems walking. I am just afraid that I will be told that I can't compete if I get it checked out.

Afraid that if I use a stronger pain killer I will not be able to train near as hard...

Surely people hurt worse than I do right now and still train...surely they do. I want this win more than anyone else at that contest...I want to be a pro. I remember telling myself in bed the other night when I was rolling over how much I wanted to be a pro. I tell myself that I can deal with the pain...

You my friend probably have a slightly pinched nerve. Lay off the ibuprofen that heavy. It actually eats liver cells.

A nice bowl of herb, a heating pad, Icey Hot in large amounts along your lower back and right side to the knee. Trust me on this. I've been down this road.

A doctor can "suggest" you not compete, but cannot stop you.

Better to know what the problem is going into your competition and take steps to protect yourself now as best you can, than not check with a doc and find out you can never compete again because you did some permanent damage.

It never hurts to see a doctor. "The more you know, the more you know."

Anyone suggest any other types of pain relievers? I may have to resort back to DMSO soon...yuck.

Go to your doctor and get him to perscribe you some codeine. (Or just buy some.. it's not too hard to find.) 120mg of codeine administered subcutaneously provides pain relief equal to 10mg of morphine administered by the same route. To maximize its analgesic properties, start at 60-90mg, and increase the doseage regularly until your contest. Most people settle around the 250mg mark for the best euphoria and pain-relief, with the least side effects.

If you need help extracting the stuff, PM me.

Note that codeine is converted to morphine in the brain. This of course will result in a positive result in a drug test for opiates. Physical addiction is possible but rare...

Wish I could help you. I know how it is to want something so badly and something happens to thwart your goal. I have been the victim of many a injury as I was making progress. I would do what the other guy said and see the doctor so you will know what the problem is and how to compete with it if possible.

aren't you worried about making it worse? i don't know much about sports physiology, but what if you are taking a minor injury and turning it into a major one by doing this?

i'd recommend seeing a doctor.

1. If you have an injury, he can make sure that training won't exasperate it.
2. he can prescribe better pain killers.

Take care

Wodin is old as fuck. If he don't know.... NO ONE DEOS! LOL

Seriously though, what could it hurt to have it checked out? The doc may even be able to advise you in a way that may HELP you compete.

Think about it.

B,

I tend to agree with Wodin. Sounds like you may have a pinched Sciatic nerve.

Go get it checked out and get a stronger pain killer. Then consider getting the occassional massage. That helped me out a lot, when I had mine.

Whew...only took 10 minutes to get out of bed/off the floor this morning...whew.

I need to get it looked at but I really can't afford to spend $40 for a doctor's visit, $$ for meds, $$ for x-rays, etc...

I know lots of strongman competitors use oxycontin, vicodin, and percocet (sp) during contests to help with the pain...

Bfold - I feel ya about medical expenses - TRUST ME. My days of being insured are numbered - FOR REAL... BUT, think about it this way: Do I borrow say $100 from my mom and get this thing checked out, maybe HELPED BEFORE COMPETITION.... or bite the bullet and just "ignore it" and HOPE that I won't REALLY impede my chances of functioning at MY BEST come competition time?

Think about it....

I "just ignored it" recently and ended of losing several days of work and a lovely trip to not one BUT TWO hospitals.

alot of what you are describing could be a pinched nerve, could also be worse. herniated disc? see a doctor now. you could save lots of $$ by finding out now what is wrong instead of later when you've done more damage. good luck, and be careful.

I guess I just see my dream as being only 3 weeks away and I hope that my back problems just go away also.

B....I am dead serious. Please...go get it checked out. You cannot be in this much pain for 3 more weeks and still expect to be mentally or even physically at your contest!!! If you have to talk to mom and dad...then do so. You need to go...I'm serious.

You are playing with fire here...and being stubborn at this point will only hinder your progress. If I were in that much pain (and you know how stubborn I am) I would have gone to the doctor several days ago.

Do you really want to screw up your back so bad that you won't be able to compete ever again after this ONE contest that means so much to you??? Think about it.

I'm feeling much better tonight...practically running, flipping, tumbling, etc... :)

You are such a bad liar! :)

You can't even see my eyes to tell if I am lying or not...

You know how much this single contest means to me. Right now I can only think of a thing or two in my life that I have ever wanted more than this right here. I promised you and plan to keep that promise...

I have to do this for me...I have to do this. If I can just make it through...I can heal later. I know that you have seen in my eyes how much this sport means to me...deep in my eyes. I know that you realize how much this single contest means to me too... My dreams can happen on October 5th 2002. Just remember when I sat down and explained how much I wanted to do this...how much I REALLY wanted to do this...

Bfold, the tremendous abuse you are putting yourself thru is not worth it. You MUST see a doctor, you may cause yourself more damage in the long term then the reward of accomplishment in the short term. I know this competition means the world to you, but your health has to be first and foremost, when the stones have been placed, the sleds dragged, the conan wheel turned....what will be left ? you. you will have to live with the idea that you may have accomplished your goal but the abuse your put your body thru will not go away.

hes right. You need competent medical information to tell you if competing will cause injury that could end your powerlifting career.

If you can't afford a doctor, have you PM'd any of the doctors here on EF? Its better than nothing.

Why not ask Kakdiesel, he is a studying chiropractor.

We can't always get what we WANT Bfold. Sometimes we just have to settle for what we NEED.

Please just go get looked at. Somehow I don't think if you asked your parents to float you a loan, they will say, "No."

Hell man, do I have to come down there, strap you to my back and take you myself?

B - Ibuprofen also lowers you blood platelet level.. Blood platelets are the little things that help your blood clot and keep you from bleeding to death both external AND internal! Lay off and ibuprofen and go see a doc. A doc will give you the info you need to make a informed decision. Without his/her insight you are just being foolish.. yes foolish.. sorry my friend, but I don't want to see you get hurt permenantly.

Bfold, I think your stubborn ass is probably not going to see your doctor but will you at least consider seeing a GOOD chiropractor??? If it is something major he will refer you and if you just knocked something out of place he will fix it and then you won't need the pain killers. Many chiros specialize in sports chiropractic so he will understand how important competing is to you. If you can't afford a doctor's appointment today how will you afford back surgery tomorrow????

definately get it checked out (which it seems like your finally going to do)
Let me tell you a story..

In my long time on this earth(15 years) i've had a few injuries.

One was a strained hamstring tendon(where it connect to the glutes. I couldnt run, walk, jump, have fun.. i even had trouble sitting down. But my stubborn ass decided that instead of re-habbing it, i was going to play football and score myself my first touch down ever. And i did. But at what expense? At the expense of not being able to train legs for 4 months, limping for 4 months, being in constant pain. So i turned what could have been a simple 1-2 month rehab into something that was twice as long.

Also another time, i was bouncing on my trampoline, landed wrong, and pinched a nerve in my back. I thought nothing of it. Then 2 days later i couldnt bend over. And what did my stupid ass do? I went back and boucned on the trampoline and made it worse. Well long story short, i couldnt perform my normal activities for 2 full weeks, and had my self barely doing my normal stuff after a full month.

And finally, my last story....

I was at a friends b-day party, and im always the trampoline guy (bouncing and flipping) so he had a 14 ft trampoline (the round ones) and i decided i would just sac up and try the double back flip. well i rotated too slow on my first flip and landed on my neck . That resulted in the scariest time of my life, and not being able to turn my neck fully for 2 weeks(only partially). I didnt do a single thing to rehb, i just let it heal by its self. Im sure if i would have tried to fix it myself, i would've been better in less than a week.

Moral of the stories is that you should be smart, and rehab your injuries. I didnt rehab mine and i lost almost half a year of training to it (most of this occured as i was just starting).

Good luck man.

You have a friend that is a chiro and you have been suffering for how long?!?!? He should be able to help you or tell you who you need to see - glad you are going!

2 more weeks...
