I'm 23 and I weigh around 200 pounds, what do I need to bench to show up at a competition and fit in. I'm not looking to win, I just don't want to embarass myself.

by you showing up, that alone supports the sport. and that's something to be proud of. and those guys are way past pointing and giggling. everyone there is serious (most of them) and supportive of the fellow lifters. where Stilleto? ask that dude...

Usa powerlifting open class( youve done a cycle before)

198lbs
1st place was 579lbs
20th was 419lbs

220lbs
1st 584
20th 452

ok, seriously, you don't NEED any amount to enter. I mean, you can enter and be cheered on and feel just as good as any of the competitors, nomatter how much you're benching. ESPECIALLY if its your first meet. If you haven't been to one- go. You'll see beginners there and know you can enter with any amount.

Ok cool I am benching in the low 300's I guess there is nothing wrong with showing up and getting last, it's not like the average joe off the street can bench 300 pounds.

go for it orb, I tried one out and put out LOW numbers compared to others, but as Stilleto said, you'll still get cheered on. A lot of comrodity to the one I participated and others i've watched

I found a local competition but they all seem hell bent on drug testing. I have not only done a cycle of steroids but I'm currently on one.

"You must be drug free for at least 36 months prior to the date of this meet to be eligible to compete. At least 10% of all lifters will be tested by urinalysis. Banned substances include but are not limited to anabolic steroids and growth hormones. Prescription diuretics and psychomotor stimulants cannot be used for a seven day period prior to the competition. The complete list of prohibited substances is available on the web site of the World Anti-Doping Agency (see www.WADA-ama.org). If you are tested, you will be notified only if you fail the test. Failures will be published on the USAPL web site. Failure will result in a ban from all USAPL competitions for three years."

How do you find meets that don't drug test? Should I just go anyway and hope I don't get tested. I'm not trying to fool anyone I just want to lift in a competition.

If you're pushing over 300 nobody is going to say you don't belong in the contest. I do suggest not entering a drug free contest if your juiced. I respect the lifters that remain natural. Like someone else said, if you lift in the APF they don't test.

you don't understand... its like running a marathon- VERY few people are there to actually WIN it. everyone else is just there to DO it and to beat there own record.
Its like that at a powerlifting competition- you'll get cheered on nomatter what you're doing. Yeah, the biggest lifters get the big cheers, just like the winner of a marathon, but it doesn't diminish what you do, nomatter what it is.
