How much do Bartenders make??? my son is thinking about doing this while he goes through college. anyone got any feed back? in general?

Depends where and what kind of bar (regular bar-saloon, nightclub, hotel....). They make anywhere between $50 to $400/night.

About $1500 cash money for 4 nights work down here.

note: college bar, tippers suck if any...if he bags $150 on a weekend night, he will be lucky, maybe $40 on a weeknight.

Factor in if the owners kids work there, you will be screwed.

That's not true from what I've seen. Most of my friends tip pretty well - I've got 3 college bars within 5 minute walk

same around here as well

maybe less or more. It is all about the huge few tips and the repeat business.

Get a job driving escorts around instead as seems you have no professional background or education to fall on.

Pffft, yeah right.

I guess I see your point, how big is the tip gonna be on 50 cent draft night, right?

I think I tip more generiously than many college students...

I'm the same way, only because I lived off tips for a period, esp. if the person makes sure I am take care of, then I'll go 30-40% in some cases.

I took bartending classes in SF.....the guys who ran the school were trying to get me a job in the castro......straight guys in the castro, especially straight "bears" like myself........make ridiculous bank. Unfortunately I couldn't wait weeks for something to open up......so ppted for the adult nightclub business.....yeah........wages=WEAK.......until you make shift manager at least.....but fuck, even then. And living in SF like that? Uh Uh

I did bartend for a catering company though......got to bartend on a charter boat that headed out into the bay for july 4th......THAT WAS FUCKING AWESOME!!

on the 4th? hell yeah.....if I remember I think I made close to 1k.....it was ridiculous. The boat was huge......4 decker ferry......the hornblower if anyone's ever been to SF. One main bar on every floor........well over a thousand folks. They hooked it up.......even the servers were making out.

Biteme could not be a bartender because I would not contribute to people destroying their lives with alcohol.

Let's put it like this, the bars here pay their bartenders (I think) $3.03 per hour. Just enough that when their paycheck comes every two weeks it will equal zero after taxes. Their entire paycheck is gone to paying taxes, social sec, 401k, etc... they live off their tips.

And all of them drive new Lexus's, Beemers, Audis, etc...

I hooked a friend that moved down from NC up with a job at Alibi while he was looking for something in his field (he has MBA) and after 2 weeks, he never looked anymore. He made over 90,000 cash the first year.

Plus you get invited (if you are popular) to other events to work. He charges $500 per night to work private parties. In addition, some of the local businesses in town recruit him for certain activities like being on board host and plan director for a travel company (so he travels for free), etc..

One of my clients is a bartender at one of the busier bars here in TO. She tells me her income is always up and down and the lifestyle is tough because everything is cash cash cash. For example, over xmas some drunk business guy tipped her $500 to try to pick her up, now she's only getting two shifts a week and making crap. Up and down.

Now I used to know a girl who waitressed at a strip club - that is the place to do it. She would get $1000 tips on a regular basis from rich asian guys who wanted to score with her. She was stunning and always got offers but just banked everything. Bought a condo for basically cash after one year.

I made roughly 200 per night on weekends behind the bar and the same as the doorman

I tip well

but if some kind of special is going on I feel stupid for tipping cause what I bought was so cheap - so you gotta buy like 4 drinks and then tip.

this is much more realistic than the estimates being thrown around, and I assume you are not in a dive.

It was a "Buffalos" or "Wild Wing" kinda joint when I was behind the bar - place was PACKED on the weekends - average bar/meal ticket was 50 or so dollars.

The door man job = had a high cover to get in = different typical customer.

I bartended at the biggest club here (at the time). On busier nights, we were sometimes over staffed, so we made a little less. Thursday through Saturday, I'd probably average $200-400 per night after tipping the bussers and barbacks. Fridays were the best because it was gay night. They drink better booze and tend to tip better. It was pretty fun, I had 3 roommates at the time, so I had no real housing expenses, my car was paid for, I got in free without having to stand in line at every other club, and sometimes I'd work private parties, which paid very well.

Buffalos or Wild Wing?

No. It's Buffalo Wild Wings.

Yep.

There were times where girls walked up and wrote their first name and address on a cocktail napkin and said to come by after work.

save friday and sat nites as your nights to go out and have fun, you are only young once and from what I gather those who work in the bar scene really do not like to go out as much (typically I hear this as their are exeptions to all)

Um, it depends on where you work, and what shift, and whether you are required to share your tips with others during your shift.

IMO, bartending is likely a good gig for a college student. The potential for making a lot of cash is high - if you get a job at the right place and get a good, busy shift.

this tipping business is strange, here you get 20 bucks an hour and tips arent really worth speaking of

lol shits different depending on the state.

Here in Illinois, my sis got $3 something an hour waitressing and that its.

She moved to Oregon and is now getting the state minimum wage which is $6.50 or something + tips which is not that shabby...

Can be a good or bad thing....

20 Bucks an hour to waitress? Pffft..who pays that? Anyone can wait on tables....

Was just joking dude :)

I know dude.

Thing about tips......

Business owners are now liable if their waiter/resses do not report enough salary PLUS tip to = minimum wage.

They will be hit with tax collection come April.

Any amount OVER the minimum wage goes to a tax CREDIT for the owner.

If you are in the hospitality industry and do NOT declare ALL your tips...you can forget about getting a bank loan if you need one.

Not true. There are a number of stated income programs because of people in this field.

It depends where you work and how busy it is. I have worked at everything from bars/clubs to golf & country clubs. My tips would depend on how busy it was but even on a slower night your bring home close to $100 in cash plus you get your shitty minum. Actually the golf & country club paid more then min that was a pretty sweet deal becuase it is a club you get to know you customers better and if your likeable person you tend to see your tips go up as they get to know you better.

True.

but its usually not a typical loan program and you are placed into Type B loans or non docs

Eh, if the score is within conforming guidelines and if they can show enough reserves, they qualify for the same rates as full doc (home loans only). I know that car loans are probably different, but with homes, it's pretty much the same. Where they get hit is when the scores are a little lower or if they can't show money in the bank, but that increases the risk significantly and they should be hit.

True enough.

I think the issue is, how many bartenders do you know with a high enough credit score to get an "A" class credit rating??

Without tax records to verify wages - pwnage on the %age rate.

It's very good money and for that reason, getting a bartender job is usually not all that easy since everyone wants one. Also, it works like strip-clubs - being more attractive will typically bring you in more money. The girls with the biggest tits always pull in the most. Every...single....time.

The problem I've come across isn't so much a score high enough, it's depth of their credit history. Since they make all of their money in cash, they rarely finance anything. I'll talk to people that have a score in the 700's and enough cast to put 10% down on a house, but their only credit is a couple of deferred student loans. Frustration.

If you are good - personable, quick and talk a good talk - you will make bank.

I've tended bar for years in many different types of establishments both in the US and in Paris. I always made good dough.
