How many users on here practice martial arts?

Really tae boxing is sick. I have alwayz wanted to do it and be involved in it since I was a kid. So I said hey fuck it. The dude that is teaching me incorporates everyhting. Shin kicking and the sort

Im starting Jeet Kun Do concepts

Kali which is Filipino stick fighting

And Silat which started in Indonesia. I wanted to know if anyone on here has heard of these types and how effective they are? Im not just intrested in killing people but hopefully growing spritually and mentally. Not to sound too much like a pussy. Does anyone have long term experience? Or knows which style is most effective or looks the best.

It would also be kinda nice to take down a 300lb dude considering im 165 without taking a shit =)

I figure if Hoyce gracias 135lb ass can do it in UFC why cant I

Big moose where you take it?

Ever here of progressive martial arts or Phoneix both teach jeet kun do concepts

Can you guess?:) ...and a few other things over the last couple decades of studying

Jesa1, if you think Thai boxing is spelled Tae boxing, something is seriously wrong with whomever is teaching you bro.:)

Assuming that the fight doesn't turn into Barnum and Bailey's,"I'll hit you low, you'll bite my nose off"attraction,it will likely be a Lewis win.BUT-Tyson always stands a puncher's chance, and that can never be discounted.I'm leaning towards Lewis, based on overall skills at this point in time.

I say lewis also, Tyson will charge him like a pitbull and lewis will box him....Honestly i would rather watcj Johmmy Tapia or ROy jones any day over these retards

Started off with Hapkido for three months, then saw the light. Kali (2 years), JKD (4 years), submission wrestling (2 years).

Its all the same, just fighting.

-karate-do (when i was a kid)
-wing chun kung fu
-jeet kune do
-chin na (chinese)
-pencat silat (indonesian)

Yeah Silat is it. Several of the most skilled and respected martial artists (such as Dan Inosanto) say silat stacked with some chin na (chinese) and possibly some philipino style is the way to go. Dan says that silat has some of the smoothest most efficient techniques he knows of. My teacher says the same thing.

The styles you mentioned are martial arts. That means they were originally intended to be used by the military and/or police, or something similar. If you want to mix in religion with your fighting, I understand Ba Gua and Tai Chi are both good.

I once feel over a tall railing and landed on my feet, for that moment everybody thought I was a Kung Fu Master....now I just watch Bruce Lee Flicks :karate:

When I was a kid I started in tae kwon do when Bruce Lee movies were the big thing in the early '70s... then started studying kung fu styles...8 step Praying Mantis/Wah Lum...7 star praying mantis... pa kua chaun... so rim... wu shu... chin na... chi gung... much of it was a real waste of time... then I fell in love with boxing and started working on the heavy bag by myself. Currently I'm looking to take a class in boxing or kick boxing... so far I've only learned from friends and tapes.

Was in southern praying mantis kung fu for a few years way back, more recently bagua for a few years, but had to drop class and stop lifting due to eye surgeries etc a couple years back.

I am...

have been involved in Goju Ryu Karata for awhile and also taking some forms of grappling lke Kempo and BJJ. I have met Frank Sharock and Royce Gracie in diff places and have got a few chances to learn from some of the greats.

I'm sure it was, but at least you learned it, and can continue to train in the techniques from each style that you find most effective, and dump the rest. That is what Bruce Lee did, and I agree with it.

So why don't you learn boxing. Learn it by itself until you have a good grasp on it and then begin to incorporate tecniques from your other styles into your training. You already should know a full spectrum of decent kicks from Tae Kwon Do, so there you know how to kickbox. Plus you learned Wu Shu and other exotic Kung Fu styles, so you should already have some concept of balance and stances etc. I would think all you would need to learn is boxing and then incorporate that into your training and then you will know everything you need to effectively "kickbox", you could even go to advanced kickboxing, such as Jeet Kune Do or Muay Tai, without learning much more than you already know. On top of that you already studied Chi Na which is an excellent system of joint locks, and pressure points that really kicks ass.
I hope you don't ditch some good techniques. Any well rounded proficient fighter knows how to properly execute at least a few techniques from each category (strikes, locks, and throws).

Also did a little amature boxing during and shortly after my tour with Uncle Sams canoe club.

Why would I be "offended"? I pointed it out because it was funny you spelled it "Tae" as in Tae bo.

So is jeet kune do an effective art?
Where I live there, the only real arts I have to choose from are judo/ and Jeet kune do?
Which would be a better to learn, or more effective.
I checked out the judo dojo and the instructor said he teaches more for turnments.
I E-mailed one of the Jeet kune do instructors and they said its not really geared toward turnaments,,, although it can be if thats what you want to learn.

I have learned/practiced BJJ over the past few years (5). It was through a friend that learned from a well experienced guy from Brazil. We'd get together a few times a week and practice what all he learned from the guy.

Funny story: After practicing BJJ for about a year, I got into a fight (no i didnt start it, but defended myself). The guy obviously had no martial art skills, probably just use to brawling. Well long story short I had this mofo in all kinds of submissions like it was a natural thing for me. -Basically I was just messin around
with him. Then after mounting him I beat the crap out of him. The best part about it was that it happened during the county fair, so there were about 150 people watching this! A lot of whom knew me.:smshot:
